NGC 5312 is a 13.9 mag bright lens-shaped galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Hounds in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 195 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 45,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 5318 , NGC 5319 , NGC 5321 , NGC 5347 , among others .

The object was discovered on May 2, 1785 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, which she labeled “Two. Both eF, stellar, distance 4 ′ or 5 ′ nearly in meridian. The northern faintest ”. The second galaxy named is NGC 5318 .
