NGC 5301 is a 12.3 likes bright spiral galaxy of Hubble type SBc in the constellation of hunting dogs . It is an estimated 71 million light years from the Milky Way .
The object was discovered on May 11, 1787 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflecting telescope, who described it as “F, mE 15 degrees sp-nf, lbM, 4 ′ long, 0.75 ′ broad”.
