NGC 5306 is a 12.2 mag bright, elliptical galaxy with a Hubble-type E1 twin core in the constellation Virgo . It is estimated to be 319 million light years from the Milky Way .

The object was discovered on March 5, 1785 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "F, vS, iF, r". John Herschel noted “F, R, psbM, 20 arcseconds” during an observation with an 18-inch reflecting telescope in 1847.
