NGC 6653 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E1: in the constellation Peacock in the southern sky . It is an estimated 225 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 115,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 4746 and IC 4747 .
The object was discovered on June 28, 1835 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
