Amphoe Na Wa ( Thai : อำเภอ นาหว้า ) is a county ( amphoe - administrative district) in the province of Nakhon Phanom . The province of Nakhon Phanom is located in the northeast region of Thailand , the so-called Isan .

geography

The land is flat and is located on the Khorat plateau . The landscape is rich in tropical vegetation. The next larger towns are Sakon Nakhon (43 kilometers to the west) and Nakhon Phanom (about 55 kilometers to the east). Neighboring counties (clockwise from north): Si Songkhram and Phon Sawan Districts in Nakhon Phanom Province, and Kusuman , Mueang Sakon Nakhon , Phanna Nikhom and Akat Amnuai Districts in Sakon Nakhon Province .

The next big city is Udon Thani (about 200 kilometers to the west). The nearest river is the Mekong (about 55 kilometers to the east). The closest lake is Nong Han near Sakon Nakhon . The capital Bangkok is about 900 kilometers southwest.

history

The district was initially set up on July 16, 1971 as a "branch district" ( King Amphoe ) by separating the three tambon Na Wa, Na Ngua and Ban Siao from the Si Songkhram district. On March 22, 1979, he was raised to full amphoe status.

The small town of Na Wa was originally founded in 1963 as a sanitary district (Sukhaphiban, สุขาภิบาล ). Like all sanitary districts, it was raised to the status of a small town ( Thesaban Tambon ) in May 1999 .

The name of the Na Wa district means "field of the Wa trees" ( Syzygium cumini ) that grew here in the past.

economy

The place lives from agriculture , mainly rice is grown. The area is completely untapped for tourism . The standard of living is below average in comparison within Thailand. A farm worker (or comparable position) earns around 100 baht per day, i.e. around 60 euros per month (as of 2005).

Most of the local employees are only employed seasonally . Most of the able-bodied men work outside the Isan, especially in tourist areas or abroad; sometimes entire families are moving away temporarily (for this reason some buildings are empty).

Roads 2346 and 2185 lead through Na Wa, leading to Sakon Nakhon and Nakhon Phanom . There is no connection to the rail network of the Thai State Railways (SRT).
