The Southwest Nature Reserve ( English Southwest Nature Reserve ; better known as National Botanical Garden , English National Botanical Garden ) is a 12 hectare nature reserve in the Namibian capital Windhoek , located directly between Windhoek-Zentral and Klein Windhoek .

history

The area of ​​the Botanical Garden was handed over to the city of Windhoek by the Namibian government in 1969 . A little later, the creation of hiking trails began. Due to financial problems, the area was given up a little later. With the construction of the research institute on the edge of the site, the redesign of a botanical garden began. The Botanical Research Institute took over the site and developed it with the help of the Botanical Association of Namibia .

The garden's task as a nature reserve is to protect and preserve the exclusively Namibian flora . The garden also serves as a recreational and educational facility.

Worth seeing

Today, in addition to a small landscaped garden, there is a largely undesigned area with hiking trails. The most dense cluster of Windhoek Aloe ( Aloe littoralis ), the plant of the Windhoek city logo, deserves special attention . In addition, there are u. a. Quiver trees and "lilies". Plants from the Namib can be discovered in the desert house . All sorts of small mammals , birds , reptiles and insects live among the different plants .
