The Stechlin-Ruppiner Land nature park is a large conservation area in the north of the state of Brandenburg . The nature park was named after the Großer Stechlinsee and the historic Ruppiner Land landscape . It includes the Rheinsberg lake area and Ruppin Switzerland .

The area around the Großer Stechlinsee has had the status of a nature reserve since 1938 on an area of ​​1,774 hectares . The Stechlin nature reserve was protected on November 15, 2002 with a total size of 8,760 hectares by the establishment of the statutory ordinance. The nature park was made famous in 2001 and has been the 15th major conservation area in the state of Brandenburg since then. According to the Brandenburg Nature Conservation Act, nature parks mainly consist of nature reserves and landscape protection areas. The Stechlin-Ruppiner Land nature park is home to more than half of the natural clear water lakes in Brandenburg and also some special features, such as the occurrence of dystrophic moorland lakes, diverse moorland areas and forests, in particular red beech forests. The nature park has an area of ​​approx. 680 km², approx. 62% of forests, approx. 7% of lakes (more than 100) and rivers, approx. 17% of fields, approx. 9% of grassland and approx. 5% of infrastructure and living space are used.

Location and transport links

The nature park is located in the districts of Oberhavel (approx. 1/3) and Ostprignitz-Ruppin (approx. 2/3) in the north of the state of Brandenburg and borders on the state border with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and in the east on the Uckermärkische Seen nature reserve . The nature park is located in the area of ​​the cities of Fürstenberg / Havel , Gransee , Lindow (Mark) , Neuruppin , Rheinsberg and Wittstock / Dosse as well as the communities Großwoltersdorf , Herzberg (Mark) , Sonnenberg , Stechlin , Storbeck-Frankendorf and Vielitzsee .

The federal highway 122 runs through the nature park, the federal highway 96 runs along its eastern edge and the federal highway 167 runs along its southern edge .

The visitor center of the nature park is located in Menz . In the NaturParkHaus Stechlin an exhibition is shown on the characteristic habitats of the area - beech forests, moors and clear water lakes - and their inhabitants. The NaturParkHaus is sponsored by the “Naturlandschaft Stechlin und Menzer Heide e. V. ”, which also offers a program of environmental education events.
