Navjot Singh Sidhu (born October 20, 1963 in Patiala ) is an Indian politician, television presenter and former cricketer . He is currently the Minister for Local Administration, Tourism, Culture and Museums for the State of Punjab .

Life

childhood and education

Sidhu was born into a Sikh family. His father, Sardar Bhagwant Singh, was a good cricketer and promoted his son.

Cricket career

Start of career

As a cricketer he played first-class cricket for Punjab in national Indian cricket from 1981 . After he managed a Century as a player in the North Zone in a Tour game against the West Indies , he was nominated for the third Test of the Tour . When he only managed 20 runs in 90 minutes, he was booed goodbye by the audience and referred to by the media as a strokeless wonder . He had another appearance on the tour in the fifth test, but was initially no longer nominated for the national team.

He didn't play cricket for a year while he was graduating from college. When his father passed away in 1985, he returned to cricket. Four years after his controversial debut, he was again considered for the national team when he was nominated for the 1987 Cricket World Cup . In his ODI debut in a group game against Australia , he scored 73 runs. He was also able to convince in the other games and he achieved four fifties in his first four ODIs. Sidhu was also able to convince in the Asia Cup that followed a year later and was chosen as the tournament's player.

Establishment in the test team

He played his next test in November 1988 on the tour against New Zealand , where he managed a Century with 116 runs. He achieved another Century in the fourth test on the West Indies tour at the end of the season. He scored his first ODI-Century in 1989 in a three-nation tournament in Sharjah against Pakistan .

As a result, Sidhu had significantly more problems. On the tour in Pakistan , he and Sachin Tendulkar saved the draw in the last test in the second innings and was named Man of the Match . On the following tour in New Zealand , he injured his wrist and was unable to finish the tour. He couldn't convince against England and Australia . So it happened that he was no longer considered for the team for the tour in South Africa in 1992/93 .

For the following tour against England he came back to the team and scored a Century in the second test in Madras . He was also able to convince in the ODI series of the tour and became Man of the Series . He achieved further Centuries in the test series in Sri Lanka in 1993 and in both the test and ODI series on the Sri Lankan tour in India in the following season . He also managed a century on the West Indies tour in 1994/95 , but his performance in test cricket was significantly weaker. During the tour of India in England in 1996 , he and his captain Mohammad Azharuddin clashed and decided to leave the tour after the second ODI. Sidhu felt attacked by the nicknames Azharuddin gave him, but later an investigation of the Indian association revealed that this was based on cultural misunderstandings. In the second test in the West Indies in 1996/97 in Port of Spain , he managed his only double century with 201 runs. However, this was played so slowly that the game ended in a draw. He scored his last two Test Centuries against Sri Lanka in 1997, both away in Colombo and at home in Mohali . In 1998 he continued to play in the team, but could no longer achieve convincing performances. He played his last ODI against Pakistan in September 1998 and his last test against New Zealand in January 1999 . After he was no longer nominated, he announced his resignation from all forms of cricket in December 1999. His nickname was Sixer Sidhu, based on his aggressive style of play, and Jonty Sidu, based on his good fielding.

Commentary career

After his cricket career, Sidhu worked as a commentator. For example, he commented on the India tour in Sri Lanka in 2001 and in the Indian Premier League in 2014 . Sidhu is known and loved as a commentator for his bon mot . He was dismissed from ESPN as a commentator for the use of vulgar language and subsequently worked as a commentator for TEN Sports. Sidhu can also be seen in various shows on Indian television.

Murder charges

In 1988 there was a traffic incident that resulted in a dispute. Sidhu, who was traveling with Rupinder Singh Sandhu, allegedly attacked Gunam Singh with fist blows on the head. Gunam Singh died shortly afterwards in the hospital. After Sidhu and Sandhu were accused of murder in 1991, they were initially acquitted in 1999. In 2006 the High Court changed the judgment and sentenced both to three years in prison for culpable homicide . However, the Supreme Court of India ruled in 2007 that the verdict should be suspended. In May 2018, he was acquitted by the Surpreme Court, and instead fined for causing injuries. Since September 2018, the proceedings have been renegotiated before the Surpreme Court.

Political career

Sidhu was elected to Lok Sabha as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the constituency of Amritsar . However, he resigned from the mandate after his conviction. After the verdict was suspended by the Surpreme Court, he won the mandate in the Lok Sabha again. He prevailed in the election against Surinder Singla and won with 77,626 votes. Navjot Singh Sidhu is the current President of the World Jat Aryan Foundation. Sidhu joined the Congress Party in 2017 and won a seat in the 2017 regional elections in Punjab. Navjot Singh Sidhu was invited to be sworn in by the Pakistani politician, Imran Khan , in August 2018 . Sidhu has been harshly criticized for hugging Pakistani army chief, Qamar Javed Bajwa . However, Sidhu stated that the army chief assured him that he would open the resting place of Guru Nanak for the Sikhs on his 550th birthday.
