Nena was a German music group of the Neue Deutsche Welle , which existed from 1982 to 1987. Her greatest global success was 99 balloons . The singer and front woman Gabriele Susanne Kerner then released other musical projects under the same name .

Through a part-time job in Jim Rakete's office as the person responsible for fan mail for the Spliff group , its members Reinhold Heil and Manfred Praeker became aware of Nena , whose real name is Gabriele Susanne Kerner, and decided to produce a record with her.

In 1982 the title Nur Traum was recorded in the Berlin Spliff studio . This was also published in May 1982. However, the single and the band only became known to a wide audience through an appearance on the ARD broadcast Musikladen on August 17, 1982. As a result, the song became a big hit in German-speaking countries and helped the band to achieve a commercial breakthrough.

In January 1983 the group released their second single, 99 Luftballons , which quickly climbed to number 1 in the German charts , lasted a total of 23 weeks and was awarded platinum. The title also made it into the charts in other, initially only European countries. The first album Nena , from which 99 balloons and the hit Leuchtturm was released, also received gold and platinum awards in several countries. Parallel to the release of the second album ? (Question mark) At the beginning of 1984 the title 99 Balloons met with worldwide interest. He became known in the USA when Christiane F. played a cassette with her favorite songs in an interview on the promotion tour for the film adaptation of her autobiography Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo and the reporter recognized the hit potential. The title sold over 600,000 times in a short time and rose to number two in the US charts. The title reached number 1 on the sales charts in Japan, Mexico, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, among others. The English version 99 Red Balloons , which was subsequently submitted, climbed to the top in Great Britain at the beginning of 1984 .

Keyboardist Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen composed many of the group's hits . Most of the lyrics were written by the guitarist Carlo Karges . For Nena's comeback in 2002 u. a. Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen the album.

Carlo Karges died on January 30, 2002 in Hamburg .

From 2001 to 2011 several compilation albums were released, including a. Tanz auf dem Vulkan , Definitive Collection (digitally remastered) , Alles Gute - The Singles 1982–002 , Once Is No Time and The Collection . In 2003, for the 20th anniversary of the group, the album 20 Jahre-Nena feat. Nena released, with new recordings of all hits, some of which differ greatly from the originals. It is a live recording of a concert on October 11, 2002 in the Jahrhunderthalle in Frankfurt am Main , which was also released as a DVD box. Kim Wilde , Udo Lindenberg , Hartmut Engler , Markus and Joachim Witt contributed as duet partners .
