The African American Kenya McQueen is professionally successful. She wants to do everything perfectly - at work as well as when furnishing her apartment. McQueen meets the white landscape architect Brian Kelly, with whom she has an appointment.

McQueen's friends and family press her into a relationship with an African American. She meets with black tax attorney Mark Harper at times, but then returns to Kelly.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on February 3, 2006 that the film did not rely on formulas or simple answers. He offers all the elements of a love story, but also respects his characters and treats racial issues in a more complex way than one might expect.

The editors of Rotten Tomatoes wrote that the film seriously addresses the problems of relationships between people of different races. Its "authentic attraction" and "seductive romance" would develop as naturally as the plot.

Awards

Kriss Turner won the Black Movie Award in 2006 for the screenplay ; Sanaa Lathan and Alfre Woodard were nominated for the same award. Kriss Turner received the Black Reel Award in 2007 .
