New Model Army is a British Independent - band whose music by rock - Folk and - punk elements is affected and whose origins lie in punk.

The band was formed in Bradford , Yorkshire in the late 1970s by Justin Sullivan ( vocals , guitar ) and Stuart Morrow (bass). In 1982 Robert Heaton (drums) joined them. With their music in the early 1980s, the trio of Sullivan, Morrow and Heaton laid the foundation for the band's 40-year career, with several hundred live performances across Europe .

history

At the beginning of their musical career, the band, named after Oliver Cromwell's Republican Revolutionary Army, saw themselves as the mouthpiece of the working class under England's then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher . Her musical roots are in punk. The songs, especially the early works, are lyrically politically influenced and primarily deal with problems in England in the 1980s, such as the Falklands War and the economic urban-rural divide. In addition, the band around front man Justin Sullivan supports the environmental movement to this day and criticizes US politics . At the beginning of the 1980s, the band managed to rise to a first nationwide, later also internationally known and successful band without losing their independent status. The band's breakthrough came in 1986 with their cover version of Ashley Cartwright's song 51st State .

Singer Justin Sullivan at a live New Model Army appearance

The first records were very much influenced by post-punk and at the same time characterized by melancholy . The powerful and soulful voice of singer Justin Sullivan is also striking for the songs of the band.

The lyrics contain poetic images, but also the own experiences of the band members or other people. An example of this is the song Aimless Desire , the story of which Justin Sullivan has already described in several interviews. He said he was in a pub in England one evening and a stranger told him his whole life story at the bar. Sullivan was so impressed by this that he processed what the man told him in this song.

Furthermore, the songs are always about justice , the question of the meaning of life, nature and social grievances. The music and especially the singing of Sullivan convey certain feelings such as anger, sadness or love for life.

Over time, the band continued to develop their style. While the earlier songs were often characterized by bass lines, the guitar and drums come more to the fore in later productions. Overall, the compositions have become more diverse and complex. Two of the most important albums in New Model Army's work are the successive Ghost of Cain (1986) and Thunder and Consolation (1989). Especially with the latter album, folk influences began to play a bigger role. B. can be recognized by the use of a violin . Ed Alleyne-Johnson took over the part of violinist , who worked with the band from 1989 for five years and over 500 concerts.

Other albums followed with Impurity (1990) and Love of hopeless causes (1993). The latter includes pieces like Here comes the war , an anti-war song, and White Light , which is about a near-death experience of the singer. He suffered an electric shock at a concert by the band and had to be resuscitated.

After almost six years without a studio album, Strange Brotherhood was released in 1998 . During the work on this album, musical differences became apparent between singer Justin Sullivan and drummer Robert Heaton . This was also reflected in the long production time, says Sullivan.

Heaton also became seriously ill with a brain tumor. He could, despite successful surgery the 1998 ... & Nobody Else not join the tour and was by then drums - Roadie replaced Michael Dean, who quickly established itself as a permanent member in the band.

In 2000 another studio album was released, Eight , which, thanks to the collaboration of Michael Dean as co-songwriter, broke new sonic paths. Songs like Orange Tree Roads and Paekakariki Beach testify to the band's love for nature and life without giving up their critical stance ( You weren't there , Snelsmore Wood ).

To mark the 20th anniversary of the band, two double concerts took place. On 22./23. October 2000 in Nottingham and on 22./23. December 2000 in Cologne . The band played over 40 songs from their previous creative time, which were spread over both evenings.

In 2002 and 2003 the singer Justin Sullivan went on a long and extensive acoustic tour through various European countries. He was supported initially by Dean White on guitar and keyboard and additionally by Michael Dean on percussion . The three musicians interpreted songs by New Model Army in "semi-acoustic" versions and also performed new pieces by Justin Sullivan. This was followed in January 2003 by singer Justin Sullivan's solo studio album Navigating by the stars . Further acoustic concerts followed, and at the end of the year the now traditional Christmas concerts by New Model Army.

NMA drummer Michael Dean in 2006

In 2004 there were two deaths related to the band. Darryl Kempster, a long-time companion and employee of the merchandising stand, died in June. He was shot dead in a robbery outside a hotel in South Africa at the age of 37. On November 4th, Robert Heaton , longtime drummer of the band, died at the age of 43, with a high probability of complications from a pancreatic tumor . At the end of 2004 the band opened up for Die Toten Hosen at some concerts during their tour under the name Friss oder Dies Tour . Meanwhile, the band continued to work on a new studio album, which was released in autumn 2005. With Carnival , the band continues the trend that can already be seen on Eight . The importance of the guitar (e.g. Another Imperial Day , Red Earth ) and the drums (e.g. Carlisle Road , Water ) came to the fore, and the keyboard got a bigger place in the songs because of Dean White .

Shortly after the album was released, the band went on tour again from October to December 2005, including Germany, England and France.

In the spring of 2006 in the German twin town in Bradford, glass elephant of the Maximilian park of Hamm , the seven-week exhibition One Family One Tribe - - New Model Army Art and Artefacts under the presence of Justin Sullivan and his partner Joolz Denby opened - they designed all the album covers and Shirts of the band.

Less than two years after the release of Carnival, the band's tenth studio album, High , was released on August 20, 2007 . An extensive tour through North America and Europe followed in the fall and winter.

In December 2008 the longtime band manager Tommy Tee died suddenly and unexpectedly. Therefore, studio work on the band's eleventh album was delayed. Today is a good day was published on September 18, 2009.

To mark their 30th stage anniversary in 2010, the band played numerous double concerts in New York, London, Cologne, Berlin, Nottingham and Rome, as they did ten years before. Different set lists were presented on two consecutive evenings. At the same time, Anthology was released, a collection of live DVDs and best-of CD, which was also released as a limited collector's box with additional bonus material (including a book about the band's history).

In early 2012, New Model Army announced on the band's website that their bassist Nelson had left the band after 22 years for family and personal reasons. The band pointed out that the separation had nothing to do with the fire that had broken out recently in the band's studio or other internal issues.

Ceri Monger was chosen as his successor on bass, at whose first gig almost all of the band's guitars and other equipment were stolen from the tour bus.

In September 2013, the band's twelfth studio album was released: Between Dog and Wolf .

In September 2014, the thirteenth album was released as a double album Between Wine and Blood . It is a studio and live album and contains six new songs as well as eleven live songs from the current tour.

On August 26, 2016, the band released the album Winter in Germany . On August 23, 2019, the album From Here was released with twelve new songs. From October to December 2019, the band toured Europe.
