Newspaper Cup

The Newspaper Cup ( English Newspaper Cup ) is a cup competition for Namibian soccer teams that has been held since 2001 . One team from each of the 14 regions of Namibia is eligible to play . In 2018, the tournament was expanded to include a regional netball competition for the first time . The tournament traditionally takes place on the Easter weekend .

Prize money

Since 2013

Prize money will be paid out for the first four places. In 2013 the winner received N $ 20,000, the runner-up N $ 10,000 and the third and fourth N $ 5000 each.

Until 2013

Prize money will be paid out for the four best-placed teams and the best team in the loser group. In 2011, the winner receives N $ 18,300, the runner-up N $ 10,000, the semi-finalists N $ 8000 each and the winner of the loser group N $ 4,000. In addition, the fairest player receives N $ 2,100. The best player of the tournament, the best referee, The goalkeeper and the top scorer will each receive N $ 1000.

mode

Every year in April, U20 teams from the 13 regions of Namibia compete against each other at the Newspaper Cup . The competition takes place centrally on a weekend in one of the regions that have to apply for the event.

Since 2013

With the 2013 tournament in the Otjozondjupa ( Otjiwarongo ) region, the tournament mode was switched to the round-robin system. Teams compete in three groups (two to four, one to five teams) against each other in the group. The group winners in groups A and B and the two best in group C of five advance to the semi-finals. Here is played in the knockout system.

It was played in a knockout system . The defending champion automatically received a bye for the preliminary round.
