Norbert Glanzberg (born October 12, 1910 in Rohatyn near Lemberg , Austria-Hungary ; † February 25, 2001 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) was an Austrian - German composer and pianist .

Life

Norbert Glanzberg, son of Malka and Samuel Glanzberg, was of Jewish descent. In the first year of his life, his family moved with him to Würzburg . From 1924 he took piano and composition lessons at the Würzburg State Conservatory for Music and was a student of Hermann Zilcher . Five years later he took a job at the Stadttheater Aachen , where he met Alban Berg and Béla Bartók . In 1930 he was discovered as a conductor by Emmerich Kálmán in Berlin , where he led Die Csárdásfürstin with Hans Albers in the Admiralspalast of Herman Haller . As a composer, he worked for Billy Wilder at UFA and composed the music for his feature film The False Husband - u. a. In it, the Comedian Harmonists sang his song Hasch mich, mein Liebling, hasch mich , which became a success in 1931. He also wrote the film music for Then I prefer cod liver oil for Max Ophüls .

After the takeover of the Nazis in 1933 fled Glanzberg to Paris , where he spent several years of famine, in which he found no permanent job. In France he made the acquaintance of some celebrities such as Django Reinhardt , Édith Piaf , Lys Gauty and Tino Rossi . After the occupation of France , Glanzberg had to live mostly hidden and often with forged papers with friends like Piaf or in the castle of Countess Lily Pastré near Marseille . After the war, he toured around the world as a piano accompanist for Renée Lebas , Charles Trenet and Tino Rossi. He wrote chansons for Édith Piaf - including the famous Padam… padam (1951) - and for Yves Montand Les grands boulevards (1952).

In 1952 he married Marischka Mazurek. He composed the music for films such as Der Kurier des Zaren with Curd Jürgens (1956), The bride was much too beautiful with Brigitte Bardot (1956) and Mon Uncle by Jacques Tati (1958). In 1959 his son Serge Glanzberg was born. From the 1960s he also composed some pop songs and hits, including a. Tout se dates for Dalida (1965) and Adieu, je t'aime for Mireille Mathieu (1972). Around 1980 he returned to classical music. In 1983 he composed La mort est un maître de l'Allemagne ( Death is a master from Germany ). The title is taken from the death fugue by Paul Celan , the work itself is a song cycle for baritone and piano based on poems by victims and contemporary witnesses of National Socialism. The authors are Werner Bergengruen , Adam Kuckhoff , Gerty Spies , Chris Hornbogen, Wolfgang Philipp, Theodor Kramer, Ernst Münziger, Johanna Kirchner , Hubert Gsur; a section is taken from the Dies irae . The song cycle was orchestrated by Daniel Klajner. In 1985, Glanzberg wrote La suite yiddish for two pianos, inspired by novels by Isaac Bashevis Singer . The work was orchestrated by the composer and conductor Frédéric Chaslin . In 1996, Glanzberg's wife died. In 1998 he returned to Würzburg for the first time to give a concert. Glanzberg died three years later.
