The Georgia Mountains Region, or North Georgia Mountains , is an area that begins in the northeast corner of Georgia , United States and extends in a westward direction. The mountains in this region lie within the Blue Ridge Mountains range that ends in Georgia. The over a billion year old Blue Ridge Mountains are among the oldest mountains in the US and are sometimes mistaken for the oldest mountain in the world (in fact, they are only a third of the age of the greenstone belt in Barberton , South Africa , which is 3.6 Billions of years ago it is widely recognized as the oldest mountain range on earth.) The mountains in this area are part of a vast North American mountain system known as the Appalachians , which stretch across the United States in a north-south direction along the eastern regions of the state and into Alabama end up.
The region is known for its rugged and scenic beauty. The Cherokee who lived in these mountains called them Sah-ka-na'-ga - "The Great Blue Mountains of God". Much of the North Georgia Mountains comprise more than 3,000 km² of the Chattahoochee National Forests .

The cities in the North Georgia Mountains region are Helen , Cleveland , Sautee-Nacoochee , Clarkesville , Clayton , Dahlonega , Gainesville, and Toccoa in the northern part. Elberton , Hartwell and Lavonia are further south.
