The Novastar is a Ro-Ro - ferry .

history

The Nova Star in Portland (2014)

The ship was built under the hull number BO619 at the Singapore Technologies Marine shipyard in Singapore for the LD Lines belonging to the French shipping company Louis Dreyfus Armateurs. The launching of the ship took place on 8 October of 2009. The ship was completed in 2011. It was christened by Thérèse Gehanne, wife of the CEO of the Louis Dreyfus Armateurs Group.

The ship should initially be delivered in the summer of 2010 and used as a Norman Leader between Le Havre in France and Portsmouth in the United Kingdom . The construction contract was canceled in March 2011 because the ship did not meet the agreed specifications and would have been delivered too late due to delays in construction. Since then, the ship has been idle at the shipyard.

From May 2014 it operated as Nova Star between Portland in the US state of Maine and Yarmouth on the Canadian peninsula Nova Scotia . The ship sailed under the flag of the Bahamas with home port Nassau. At the end of the 2015 season, the ferry service was discontinued. The ship was subsequently arrested in Maine for unpaid bills. After a large part of the outstanding claims had been settled, it was released after about a month in December 2015. In February 2016, Inter Shipping from Morocco chartered the ship and started operating it between Algeciras in Spain and Tangier in Morocco from March 2016 . The ship was then launched in Algeciras in 2017 .

From the end of June 2018, the Polferries ship was to be used as part of an 18-month charter between Gdansk and Nynäshamn . The ship was overhauled at the Gdańska Stocznia "Remontowa" shipyard in Gdańsk for use at Polferries . After several delays, the ship first operated the route on September 14, 2018. It complements the Wawel ferry on the route , so that instead of a departure every two days, a daily departure in each direction can be offered.

Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by four ten-cylinder diesel engines made by MAN Diesel (type: 10L32 / 44CR). The engines each with 5,600  kW power acting through reduction gear on two controllable pitch propellers . The ship thus reaches a speed of 22  knots . It is also equipped with two bow thrusters , each with an output of 1,500 kW.

There are three diesel generators for the power supply, each with an output of 1,462 kW ( apparent power : 1,828  kVA ), which are driven by MAN diesel engines (type: 7L21 / 31), as well as an emergency generator with 600 kW output (apparent power: 750 kVA), which is powered by one Caterpillar diesel engine (type: C32 ACERT) powered is available.

The ship is equipped with a ramp each in the bow and stern area . Two ro-ro decks with 1,575  lane meters can be reached via the ramps . Trucks and cars can be transported here. The ship also has two height-adjustable ro-ro decks for the transport of cars. The two height-adjustable decks have an area of 1000 m² and provide a further 1,215 gauge, so that a total of 2,790 gauge is available. The ro-ro decks are internally connected by ramps. Depending on the configuration, 67 trucks and 200 cars or 44 trucks and 400 cars can be charged. There is space for 1215 passengers on board. The ship has 162 passenger cabins with a total of 684 beds, 248 recliners and 64 cabins for the ship's crew .
