action
Malchow in Mecklenburg in November 2007: Inga in her early 20s, owner of a small lending library , lives alone. She regularly visits her grandparents who raised her. Her mother, it is said, drowned in the Baltic Sea . Inga has no memory of her. Nobody knows anything about her father.
In Konstanz , literature professor Robert says goodbye to his girlfriend Claire, who wants to keep him from his trip, as he has just survived a heart attack . He wants to go to Malchow to find Inga. He meets her in her lending library and wins her trust. He reveals to her that he had a guest student as a literature lecturer in Konstanz who had fled the GDR . Her name was Anne and she had left her child, barely six months old, with her grandparents in Malchow in 1980. She fled with the Russian deserter Juri - Inga realizes that it is her mother's story. She is angry with Robert, who suddenly destroyed her orderly life, and angry with the villagers, who all knew that their mother had fled. Even her best friend Steffi, it turns out, has not revealed anything to her. She sets off with Robert to Konstanz to find Anne.
On the way both learn that Juri is now living in Stuttgart at the old freight yard. He recognizes her because she is very similar to her mother, but rejects her when she offers him money for information about Anne's whereabouts. They only talked the next day, and Juri said that he and Anne had tried to catch up with Inga after their escape, but that this was not possible. Anne also soon separated from him and got back together with Alexander, their mutual escape helper. Both were already a couple in Malchow until Alexander and his family fled to the West. Alexander is also Inga's father. He lives as a doctor in Constance.
Inga and Robert go to Constance. What Inga does not know is that Robert is following her every step closely, because he wants to process her story into his novel Novemberkind . He secretly meets with his publisher . At the same time he has a remorse for taking advantage of Inga, especially since he has fallen in love with her. When his publisher thinks that this is precisely what gives the story another kick, he cancels the novel.
In Constance, Inga finds out that Alexander is now working as an orthopedic surgeon , and she makes an appointment with him. He realizes that she is his daughter, but quickly lets an intern join her and examines her apparently motionless for back pain. She stays in front of his house to see Anne, but the woman who leaves Alexander's house with a child the next day is not Anne. In the practice, Inga confronts Alexander and he explains everything. After the escape, Anne couldn't cope with the fact that she had to leave her daughter behind. As early as 1982 she was admitted to a psychiatric ward and emotionally numbed to such an extent that even the doctor treating her gave up on her. More surprised had all been to muster enough strength in 1992, suicide to commit. Alexander had long since broken away from her at the time and had not visited her any more. Inga reproaches both the doctor and Alexander - if she had found out about her mother after the fall of the Wall, she would have visited her and she might still be alive.
She goes with Alexander to her mother's grave. The burial motto, he says, was chosen by her literature lecturer. Inga realizes that Robert knew about her mother's death the whole time, and also learns that Robert had been planning for a long time to turn Anne's diaries and notes into a novel. She goes into his apartment and sees the drafts for the novel and his notes from the last few days. Robert gives her her mother's diaries. Deeply disappointed, she travels back to Malchow, only to say goodbye to Steffi. She leaves a letter to her grandparents and sits on the next train with no destination. During the journey, she begins to write her own story.
Reviews
"They still exist, the good debut films: Christian Schwochow's November child with an outstanding Anna Maria Mühe is an astonishingly mature melodrama about the long-term consequences of an escape from the GDR."
