Since September 1, 2009, the lines coming from Zabrze (currently lines 1 and 4) have ended at the city limits at the Gliwice Zajezdnia stop and will be replaced by buses. In the urban area, tracks and catenary masts have been preserved in numerous places.
history
The history of the Silesian tram began in 1894 with the construction of the steam-powered overland tram from Gleiwitz to Deutsch Piekar with a track width of 785 millimeters and a length of 36.5 kilometers. The electrification of the railway was already carried out in 1898 . In 1912, the first stretch was applied in Katowice standard gauge umgespurt . A 9.2 km long stretch of the Beuthen municipal tram from Beuthen via Karf to Michowitz was also built in standard gauge. By 1928, the Beuthen network had been expanded to 18.25 km in length. In 1928 a tram also opened in Sosnowitz. Between 1928 and 1936, most of the narrow-gauge lines in the network were converted to standard gauge, but the gauging was not completed until 1952.
In 1922 the border between the German Reich and Poland was redefined and the metropolitan area and thus also the railway network was divided into a German western and a Polish eastern part. The now cross-border traffic was gradually discontinued until 1939, when, after the annexation of Poland, the formerly Polish parts of Upper Silesia were back in the German Reich, only a few of these lines remained.
During the Second World War , the current legal entities merged these tram networks into an overall network with uniform operation. So was z. B. 1940 introduced the numbering system, which still exists today with changes.
After the nationalization of the company in 1951, an increased expansion of the network began, especially in the 1970s, combined with the renovation of the important old lines. In the 1980s, some parts of the old lines were closed. At the end of the 1990s, the line from Bytom to Katowice began to be upgraded to a level similar to that of a tram . However, large parts of the route network are still in poor condition.
