The Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolia (short GZM , dt. Literally Upper Silesian-Kohlenbecksche metropolis ) is a local association of 41 cities and towns in the Polish province of Silesia in the metropolitan area of the metropolitan region of Katowice . It has about 2.3 million inhabitants and lies on the border between two historical regions, the industrial area of Upper Silesia ( Górny Śląsk ) and the Dombrowaer brazier ( Zagłębie Dąbrowskie ).

Story and purpose

On July 1, 2017, the GZM replaced the Upper Silesian Metropolitan Association ( Polish: Górnośląski Związek Metropolitalny ) that existed from June 8, 2007 to December 28, 2017 .

The Upper Silesian Metropolitan Association was founded from 14 towns in the Upper Silesian industrial area and the former Lesser Poland Dombrowa coal basin, the largest agglomeration in Poland alongside Warsaw . As of January 1, 2013, the cities of Mysłowice , Ruda Śląska and Piekary Śląskie had meanwhile left the Upper Silesian Metropolitan Association.

On July 1, 2017, on the basis of the Polish Metropolitan Association Act ( Ustawa o związkach metropolitalnych ) adopted on October 9, 2015 , a new Metropolitan Association was founded in place of the previous one. The new name Oberschlesisch-Kohlenbecksche Metropole is a compromise between the residents of the originally Upper Silesian and Dobrowa part of the new metropolitan association; The latter did not accept suggested names with a one-sided Silesian character, such as B. Metropolia Katowice , Metropolia Silesia or Metropolia Górnośląska .

One of the main tasks of the GZM is the coordination and promotion of the infrastructure, such as the Upper Silesian tram, and the improvement of the retrieval of EU funds for the benefit of the region. On July 22, 2017, the resolution on the establishment of the administration of metropolitan transport ( Zarząd Transportu Metropolitalnego , or ZTM for short) of the GZM was adopted.
