Shopping-Center King - Here my law applies (Original title: Observe and Report ) is a satirical tragic comedy from 2009 by director Jody Hill with Seth Rogen in the lead role.

action

An unknown exhibitionist exposes himself to customers in the parking lot of the Forest Ridge Mall . Ronnie Bernhardt, the head of the security department, makes the case his personal mission, with support from security staff Charles and Dennis, as well as the Yuen twins.

One day later, Ronnie's dream woman Brandi, who works in the cosmetics department of the mall, becomes the exhibitionist's next victim, whereupon Ronnie comforts the disturbed Brandi until the police officer Harrison arrives and takes over the investigation. Ronnie feels threatened by the arrival of the police officer and is upset that his boss is allowing an outsider to interfere in "his investigation."

In the shopping center, a masked person ransacked a shoe store during the night, causing major property damage. Ronnie then hinders Harrison's investigation by accusing several people, including the shopkeeper Saddamn, as perpetrators only because of their foreign origin. After Harrison is angry about Ronnie's behavior during a meeting with the manager of the mall and insults him, Ronnie decides to take the necessary steps to become a police officer himself.

As part of his preparations, Ronnie decides to ride along with Harrison while he is at work, whereupon Harrison outsmarts him and leaves him alone in one of the city's most dangerous areas. Against all odds, Ronnie returns to the police station victorious after defeating several drug dealers and thanks Harrison for the opportunity. Encouraged by his performance, Ronnie arranges a first date with Brandi. In the course of the evening, Brandi also consumed large amounts of alcohol and the drug Clonazepam prescribed for Ronnie and eventually vomited. The meeting ends with Ronnie having sex with the almost unconscious Brandi.

Eventually Ronnie learns that, contrary to his expectations, he failed the psychological test for employment with the police. When he wants to pick up the free coffee he is entitled to from Nell in the mall, she starts to cry because she is bullied by the manager and a colleague. Ronnie threatens the manager to kill him if he makes fun of Nell again. Ronnie's colleague Dennis also consoles him about his current situation: He persuades him to consume various types of narcotics and to brutally beat young people who are illegally skateboarding on the premises of the shopping center. At the end of the day, Dennis admits that he was the masked robber who cleared the shoe store and begins to loot jewelry from a safe. Ronnie is horrified and does not want to participate, so that he is knocked out by Dennis. Dennis can thus escape with his prey and move to Mexico.

Ronnie now wants to investigate covertly in the shopping center in order to confront the exhibitionist. He catches Brandi having sex with his "archenemy" Harrison. After Ronnie wants to confront Brandi and destroys a showcase in the cosmetics department in anger, he is fired, but refuses to leave the mall. After knocking down some of the summoned police officers, he is eventually caught by Harrison and the police officers and beaten up by them.

After a short time in prison, and after his external wounds have healed, Ronnie returns to the mall as a visitor to buy a coffee from Nell. She kisses him suddenly, but before Ronnie can enjoy the moment, the exhibitionist is standing next to them and exposing himself in front of them. Ronnie runs after him and when he runs towards Brandi in the cosmetics department, Ronnie intervenes and shoots him in the chest. The boss of the mall then hires him again. Ronnie brings the bleeding exhibitionist personally to the police station and hands him over to Harrison with the words "I won" and also explains that he would not need the police badge.

Reviews

“The film is a dubious attempt to break the genre conventions of comedy. In doing so, he neither swings himself up to parody nor to satire, but rather pleases himself in rabulistic swipes against a contourless political correctness . "

"It's funny to scream at times, then almost unbearable because of its deep black humor and yet better than many brutal comedies of recent times."

- Holger Günther - Der Tagesspiegel

“Nowhere is it written that a film has to love its characters. Numerous masterpieces don't, and the best films often include those that offend their audiences. Can anyone think of a comedy to go with it? Maybe a so-called black one? The wretched questioning is necessary because now with "Shopping-Center King" a film is coming to the cinemas that breaks all the rules. [..] Director Hill seriously compares his film to " Taxi Driver ", Martin Scorsese's post-Vietnam drama about the taxi driver Travis Bickle who ran amok. You shouldn't think about it for a second. Yes, the film is like trying to turn Abu Ghraib into a comedy. He has no morals, not even comfortable ones. In no case is it suitable as a look into the heart of American darkness. "

- Philipp Bühler - Berliner Zeitung

“As a viewer, you become increasingly unsure of how you should feel about the antihero. One vacillates between sympathy and disgust. At some point the lines between madness and reality seem to blur in the film too. [..] The initially cheap gags give way to an enigmatic, dark humor, the film develops into a fascinating mixture of slapstick and farce. For anyone who was expecting a light comedy (which, given the misleading trailer, would be no wonder), this could be an exhausting, maybe even annoying movie night. But this strange experiment definitely deserves a chance. "
