Oliver Schnellrieder (born January 7, 1970 ) is a former Austrian football player in the position of defensive and midfielder and current coach .

Career

Professional career start in Tyrol

Schnellrieder began his active career as a professional football player in 1989 with WSG Swarovski Wattens , after he was promoted to the second highest division in the country, the second division at that time, in the 1988/89 season with the club from the third division Regionalliga West . Schnellrieder made 17 professional appearances for Wattner during the 1989/90 season .

He made his professional debut on July 22, 1989 in a 2-1 home win in the first round over Donawitzer SV Alpine , where he was on the field for the entire duration of the game. In the winter break of the 1989/90 season he was transferred to FC Swarovski Tirol due to good performances , which at that time was playing in what was then the 1st division , Austria's top division. Only shortly after the new start of football in the spring, Schnellrieder made his debut in Austria's top football league on February 24, 1990 in a 5-2 home win over FK Austria Wien . During the rest of the season he came to two more missions, with the last mission on March 17, 1990 after only 46 minutes of playing time he had to leave the field after he was shown the yellow-red card by the referee .

Nevertheless, at the end of the season he became Austrian Football Champion with the Tyrolean Association , which was his greatest success so far after being promoted to the second division with WSG Swarovski Wattens. In the following season Schnellrieder was no longer able to integrate into the team of FC Swarovski Tirol, which meant that he only got short appearances with one exception when he was on the pitch for the entire game. In the end, he and the team behind FK Austria Wien became Austrian runners-up.

The beginning with the (almost) eternal runner-up

In the summer break before the 1991/92 season Schnellrieder was awarded to SCR Altach , who had just been promoted from the Regionalliga West, to the 2nd division. He was used in 33 of 36 possible league games and scored two goals. As in the past, Schnellrieder's tough duel behavior was punished by the referees with a few yellow cards this season , eleven of them, as well as one yellow-red card this season. In the end, he finished seventh of eight places with SCR Altach in the relegation playoff and had to relegate the team back to the Regionalliga West after only one professional season.

In the 1992/93 season , the team did not make it to the second division and was runner-up behind FC Kufstein in the Regionalliga West, but the team won the Vorarlberg Football Cup for the third time in the club's history after 1986/87 and 1987/88. Schnellrieder's loan contract with the Vorarlbergers ended immediately afterwards , whereupon he signed a proper player's contract with the Altachers . As in the previous season, the SCR Altach team was runner-up in the Regionalliga West in the 1993/94 season . This time the team had to admit defeat to SC Austria Lustenau even though they had the fewest goals in the entire RL West .

Short stopover: FC Hard

1994/95 still in Altach, Schnellrieder moved for the 1995/96 season to nearby Hard for FC Hard , whose fighting team was allowed to call itself runner-up in the previous season. During Schnellrieder's engagement, the team managed only fourth place and thus a place in the middle of the table. Immediately after this season, the then 26-year-old returned to his actual club and promptly made it back to the second highest division in the country in the 1996/97 season , which at the time was still under the name “2. Division ”was held.

Performance increase in the Altachers

But Schnellrieder's renewed stay in professional football should not last long, because at the end of the 1997/98 season after 23 appearances and two goals, he had to start relegated to the third division with the team. It is worth mentioning here, however, that the team, even though it was tenth of 15 places in the end, had to relegate. The reason for this was the reformation of the league system and the introduction of a ten-league from the 1998/99 season .

In 1998/99 the team reached the second place in the table in RL West with 65 points behind WSG Swarovski Wattens, which rose to the second highest league in Austria under the new name "First Division" with 76 points and over 100 goals. A similar picture emerged in the 1999/2000 season when the Altach team was “only” runner-up again with 68 points and five points behind the champions FC Lustenau 07 .

In the following season 2000/01 Schnellrieder and his team behind FC Lustenau 07, who failed in the relegation games for the second-class First Division with a total score of 1: 6 at SV Mattersburg , were again runner-up in RL West. In the Vorarlberger Cup , too , he and his team only came second and was defeated in the final there, as in the championship, by the football club from Lustenau.

The performance of the entire team decreased in the 2001/02 season , so in the end only third place was taken behind FC Hard and WSG Swarovski Wattens. The only success this season was winning the Vorarlberger Cup, which was secured by a 3-0 victory over SV Ludesch in the final.

The 2002/03 season went very well for the team from a sporting point of view, because after a 2-0 win over SC Admira Dornbirn in the Vorarlberg Cup final, the team managed to score 108 goals in the championship. This was seven more goals than the champions, SPG WSG Wattens / FC Wacker Tirol , who won the championship with a 12 point lead and a significantly better goal difference.

In 2004 it was that time again. After years in the highest amateur class in the country, the team managed to climb again to the second highest division in Austria, which was played under the new name Erste Liga from the same year . But this time the SCR Altach should stay longer than just one season in the professional area. Schnellrieder, who scored a goal in 32 completed championship games this season, acted, as in his career so far, very strong in duels. Twelve yellow cards as well as one yellow-red card show that the now 34-year-old defender was tough. At the end of the 2004/05 season , a place in the middle of the table was achieved with sixth place. Schnellrieder was also voted footballer of the year in the state of Vorarlberg, which also meant the greatest individual success of his career.

Good performances were also brought in the following season 2005/06 , in the Schnellrieder scored three goals in 31 league games played. In the penultimate round of the season, the team crowned themselves champions of the second highest Austrian league for the first time in the club's history after a 1-0 win over SC Austria Lustenau in the Vorarlberg derby. Associated with this was promotion to the Austrian Bundesliga .

During the 2006/07 season Schnellrieder completed 33 Bundesliga appearances and scored two goals. He scored his first Bundesliga goal in the first round in a 3-2 home defeat against FC Superfund Pasching , and the second in the first point win in the fifth round in a 4-1 home win over SK Sturm Graz . After the team managed to stay in league with eighth place and Schnellrieder had reached his career goal at the age of 37, he was already looking forward to the end of his career.

Career finale in Lustenau ...

For the summer break before the 2007/08 season , Schnellrieder moved to the second-rate first division for former league rivals SC Austria Lustenau after 17 years at SCR Altach, during which he appeared as team captain for some time . Schnellrieder completed a total of 152 professional league games for the Altach club, as well as several hundred games in the amateur field; he also got ten professional igators.

At the Lustenau club, he completed 21 league games, in which he gave a total of two assists and with the team reached third place in the final table with one point behind the runner-up FC Gratkorn . He played his last professional game on May 16, 2008 in a 3-1 home win over SV Bad Aussee .

... and Wattens

In the following season 2008/09 Schnellrieder came to a total of 25 championship appearances and one goal for the club where he had made his professional debut at a young age, the WSG Swarovski Wattens.

Schnellrieder, who was known for his tough but consistent duel behavior throughout his career, received at least ten yellow cards almost every season and was often sent off with yellow-red or red.

First steps as a soccer coach

After the 2008/09 season he ended his active career as a football player and then became assistant coach alongside Adi Hütter at his ex-club SCR Altach. There he finally fell victim to the transition coach phase, which lasted around a year, eight rounds before the end of the 2011/12 season. After Hütter was on leave and Schnellrieder's work ended, Edmund Stöhr , Rainer Scharinger and then Damir Canadi took up the position of coach of the then second division team at short intervals . Meanwhile Schnellrieder found a new club in FC Hard , where he was even used as the head coach of the men's team with play in the Regionalliga West. During his activity there, during which his son David (* 1997) also made his debut in men's football, Oliver Schnellrieder was reactivated several times and even played in the country's third-highest division. After he used himself for the first time on April 12, 2014 in a 4-0 away defeat against Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz , when he played from the start and was sent off prematurely with the red card in the 22nd minute, he came to this point (As of January 20, 2015) also in 2014/15 on two third division appearances.
