World record holder Anders Gärderud and European champion Bronisław Malinowski were considered the favorites for the Olympic victory, especially since Kenyan runners could not participate due to the boycott of their country. The German runner Michael Karst, who was third in the European Championship in 1974, was another favorite, but he was only able to start the Olympic season late due to injury.
In the final, Malinowski took the lead on the fourth lap to face Gärderud's well-known sprinting strength. Gärderud, Frank Baumgartl from the GDR and the Finn Tapio Kantanen were able to keep up with Malinowski's pace. At the beginning of the last lap, Kantanen had to tear down and fell out of the lead group. Gärderud took the lead in the last 200 meters. Nothing was decided yet, Baumgartl now followed in second place and when it went into the home straight, there was a small gap to Malinowski. Now Baumgartl sat down next to the Swedes and everything seemed to amount to a duel between the two now leaders. But the East German fell at the last obstacle, Anders Gärderud sprinted safely to the finish as an Olympic champion. Bronislaw Malinowski jumped over Baumgartl, who was still lying on the ground, and won the silver medal. Frank Baumgartl still had the strength and presence of mind to get up and cross the finish line in front of Tapio Kantanen. The race was so fast that Olympic champion Anders Gärderud set a new world record. Numerous other national records fell behind.
Bronisław Malinowski and Frank Baumgartl won the first medals for their countries in this discipline.
