At the XXII. At the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow , as in 1976, a total of six horse riding competitions were held.

Hardly any other sport suffered from the boycott of the top nations, as in addition to the complete lack of athletes from the Federal Republic of Germany and the USA , athletes from other countries such as Great Britain , France and also from neutral Switzerland did not participate. Only riders from eleven nations competed in Moscow.

The so-called international festivals were held on three consecutive weekends in August 1980 as substitute competitions for the boycotting nations and athletes .

Venues

The equestrian competitions were organized in the south of Moscow, in the Bitza equestrian complex at Bitza Park . In addition to stables, accommodation and training grounds, the equestrian complex of the unions includes a jumping and dressage arena, a riding arena and a racing track for military competitions.

The riding facility was rebuilt for the Summer Olympics. Even after the Olympic Games, the facility continues to be used for equestrian sports, and international riding tournaments are held here on a regular basis.

The jumping arena has a riding arena measuring 150 by 100 meters and ridden on grass. It is surrounded by grandstands with 12,000 seats. The dressage stadium offered space for 2,000 spectators during the games, and was surrounded by lawns and contained a dressage arena measuring 20 by 60 meters. The cross coutry phase of the military's cross country ride took place in Bitza Park.

The final competition for the individual competition for show jumpers was held in the Lenin Central Stadium.

dressage

The dressage competitions were probably hardest hit by the boycott. The dressage riders, judges and trainers represented there met at the CHIO Aachen 1980 and, after a discussion, unanimously expressed the opinion that under the given circumstances, participation in Moscow would not be considered. In addition to the athletes from the Eastern Bloc , only 24-year-old Elisabeth Theurer ( European champion 1979) and Kyra Kyrklund from Finland, who is also at the beginning of her international career, took part in the competitions.

team

The Soviet Union was one of the leading nations in dressage riding in the 1970s and 1980s, but was in the team competition without serious competitors due to the boycott. In order to be able to carry out a team competition at all, Bulgaria, Romania and Poland each sent three riders, one of them However, most of them were not up to the required tasks. These riders had already started in advanced level dressage, but not at Grand Prix level . This led to the fact that instead of passengers trot and instead of piaffe just stopping were shown.

"To illustrate the level we faced in Moscow: In my overall grades , I gave eight out of 14 starters an average of less than 4!"

12 of the 14 riders of the Grand Prix de Dressage qualified for the Grand Prix Spécial , in which the individual ranking was determined. Elisabeth Theurer won the test with Mon Chérie safely. In the higher grades, the Soviet riders were able to line up in places two to four. Kyra Kyrklund followed at a distance, all other riders kept their results below 1000 points.

Show jumping

The effects of the boycott were also clearly noticeable among the show jumpers: apart from the states of the Eastern Bloc, only Mexico provided a team. None of these teams were among the top ten teams in the world in show jumping at the time. Two individual riders from Finland and Guatemala completed the field of 26 riders.

The Nations Cup in show jumping aroused a lot of criticism, where numerous riders from inexperienced nations were overwhelmed in the filled field of participants and recorded dozens of error points. The fourth to sixth placed teams got scores of 124 to 159.50 penalty points. The most extreme result was recorded by Andras Balogi, who scored 73.75 penalty points for the Hungarians in the first round.

In the individual competition on the final day of the Olympic Games, the 16 remaining riders had to overcome two more laps with their horses. Six starters managed to collect 16 or fewer penalty points. The result was 12 penalty points for the Mexican Perez de las Heras and the Guatemalan Mendez Herbruger, who were tied for third place after two laps. In this case, the rules stipulated a jump-off for the bronze medal. In the jump-off course they both received four penalty points, but Joaquín Perez de las Heras was a fraction of a second faster at the finish.

versatility

28 riders from six nations competed in the military . Individual and team ratings were determined in a competition.

On the day off, a good 29 kilometers had to be covered, 12,100 meters of which was accounted for by the Cross Courty phase. The floor of the Cross Courty route through Bitza Park was deep and muddy, but the obstacles were invitingly built. Overall, the requirements of the courses were significantly reduced compared to the 1976 Games. Eight riders were eliminated in the Cross Courty, three more gave up or did not start in jumping.

Despite the lack of the dominant nations in the military (especially Great Britain), seven nations came together for the team classification. Three of them finished the test with fewer than three riders. India, at the start of an Olympic military for the first time, had to accept the elimination of all four riders in the field.

Two riders, who four years earlier were among the ten best riders in the individual ranking of the Olympic Games in Montreal / Bromont, also competed in Moscow. Federico Roman, ninth in 1976, won the gold medal with a lead of 12.2 minus points. Yuri Salnikow, who came eighth in 1976, secured the individual bronze medal at the Moscow Games. Apart from Roman, only silver medalists Blinow and Tsvetan Donchev, who only came in fifth due to many time errors, did not get any obstacle errors in the Cross Courty.
