The Ostenuther gravel ponds are a by gravel mining incurred Stretch and a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon town of Rinteln in Schaumburg .
Nature reserve
The nature reserve with the sign NSG HA 132 is 41 hectares in size. It is congruent with the FFH area of the same name . The area has been a nature reserve since May 19, 1988. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Schaumburg.
The nature reserve is located in the west of the Weserbergland Schaumburg-Hameln nature park on the edge of the Weser lowlands west of Rinteln on the state border with North Rhine-Westphalia . It places the quarry pond (with the exception of the western bank) and the adjacent bank areas under protection. Arable and grassland areas northwest of the gravel pond are included in the nature reserve. These areas are also intended for gravel mining and are to be developed into standing water bodies with extensive bank zones after the end of mining .
The Ostenuther Kiesteiche were originally two quarry ponds. In the north of the two gravel ponds, soil degradation has already ended. The still water has been renatured and has well-developed water and bank vegetation. The southern of the two gravel ponds is still being dismantled. The mining activities connected the two gravel ponds in the western area, creating a single lake.
