The Hohenrode floodplain is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon town of Rinteln in the Schaumburg district .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG HA 222 is about 127  hectares . In the west it partially borders on the protected landscape area "Wesertal in the area of ​​the town of Rinteln" and in the south-west on the protected landscape area "Lipper Bergland". The area has been under protection since November 1, 2014. It belongs to the NABU Foundation for National Natural Heritage and is looked after by the Naturschutzbund Deutschland . The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Schaumburg.

The nature reserve is located in the Natural Park Weserbergland Schaumburg-Hameln between Hessisch Oldendorf and Rinteln in the Weser aue north of Hohenrode . It places a gravel mining area in a loop of the Weser with its gravel ponds and the adjacent areas under protection. Gravel mining began here in 1995. The approval for gravel mining already provided for the area to be subsequently recultivated and prepared for nature conservation purposes.

Steep banks in the western area of ​​the meadow landscape

The area is of backwater like gravel lakes with steep banks, shallow water and during floods rarely flooded islands as well as site-specific soft and Hartholzauwäldern coined. In addition, flood troughs, swampy zones and temporary still waters as well as gravel and sandbanks and pioneer locations can be found on the raw soil . The nature reserve is subject to the natural flow dynamics and can develop naturally. It is an important habitat for numerous plants and animals. a. various amphibians and reptiles are native. The water bodies provide a habitat for dragonflies , and numerous invertebrate organisms such as z. B. Clams .

The nature reserve is also a habitat for a diverse range of avifauna . So are u on the gravel ponds. a. Mute swan , gray goose , tufted duck , teal , teal , great crested grebe and little grebe are indigenous. In the open areas between the ponds and breeding live ringed plover . Various songbirds are also native to the nature reserve. The softwood alluvial forests offer the bag titmouse a suitable habitat. Furthermore, z. B. goldhammer , blood panther , skylark and reed hammer to be found. Kingfisher and sand martin also live here . You can build your breeding tubes on the steep slopes of the former gravel mining areas. For common terns, breeding rafts were anchored in the gravel ponds. Also for the Ospreys one was nesting box built.

The white-tailed eagle uses the area all year round for foraging and ospreys can also be found as guests. In winter, different bird species overwinter here, e.g. B. gray and white- fronted geese , cormorants , greater-fronted , tufted, pochard and wigeons , pygmy and goosander and great egret .

Parts of the nature reserve are extensively grazed with donkeys, sheep and Galloway cattle in order to preserve open land.

Part of the nature reserve in the east can be experienced on a circular route around Lake D. There is also a branch path between lakes B and C. The bank areas of lake D and individual bank areas on the south bank of lake B are approved for fishing, but stocking the waters with fish is prohibited. The southernmost part of Lake C is left out of the nature reserve. Here is a sandy beach that is used for swimming.
