The old quarry Liekwegen is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon town of Obernkirchen and the municipality of Nienstädt in the joint municipality of Nienstädt in the Schaumburg district .
The nature reserve with the sign NSG HA 212 is 22 hectares in size. It is largely from the conservation area surrounded "Bückeburg". The nature reserve has been under nature protection since February 27, 2010. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Schaumburg.
The nature reserve is located southeast of Nienstädt on the northern edge of the Bückeberge within the Weserbergland Schaumburg-Hameln nature park and is a former sandstone quarry under protection. This is characterized by a mosaic of open floor areas, shallow ponds, water-filled depressions, steep walls , rubble and spoil heaps and large stone blocks. In addition, wooded peripheral areas are included in the protected area.
The rock in the quarry consists primarily of sandstone , partly clay slate and coal, and is covered by a layer of marl and loess clay . The quarry, which is an important habitat for numerous animal and plant species, should be recultivated after the end of the mining in 2003. For this it should be filled with soil and reforested . However, after the yellow-bellied toad , an endangered amphibian species , was found in the area, the district of Schaumburg acquired the area with funding from the European Union and placed it under nature protection.
Regular maintenance measures are necessary to preserve the habitat, including the targeted removal of trees, the removal of topsoil and the creation of small bodies of water. In addition, around 12 hectares of the site are grazed with horses, including three Sorraias , a horse breed originally from Portugal, which were bred in the bison enclosure Springe . The area is also part of a NABU project to strengthen and network the yellow-bellied toad deposits in Germany.
In the nature reserve there are around 60 breeding bird species , nine amphibian and reptile species , several dragonfly and grasshopper species and other insect species , including the yellow-bellied toad and the like. a. Natterjack toad , fire salamander , swallowtail , blue-winged wasteland shrimp , red backed shrike and tree pipit .
A nature experience path has been running through the nature reserve, which is managed by the Schaumburg district association of the German Nature Conservation Union , since May 2010 , 50 percent of which was financed by the European Union from the ERDF program and 30 percent by funds from the State of Lower Saxony. The nature discovery trail makes the protected area tangible via two circular routes and several stations and provides information about the importance of the quarry as a habitat and its biodiversity.
