The Otoyol 31 motorway ( O-31 for short ) connects the cities of Izmir and Aydın in Turkey . The motorway is around 100 kilometers long. The O31 is part of the E87 and was opened in 1996. Numerous viaducts in the area of the Aydın Mountains and the Selatin tunnel - with a length of 3,048 m the longest motorway tunnel in Turkey - make this motorway a special structure. The Selatin Tunnel (Turkish Selatin tüneli ) is one of the safest tunnels in Europe . With construction costs of 120 million US dollars and the latest technology, the tunnel is one of the most expensive structures in Turkish road construction . Most of the motorway is illuminated at night.
The ring road of Izmir, O-30 branches off from this highway, near the small town Germencik a highway branches off towards Bodrum . The highway runs through a not very heavily populated area (with the exception of the İzmir metropolitan area). So it happens that there are exits - with the exception of the urban areas (İzmir and Aydın) - only about every 20 kilometers. A toll is charged for the entire motorway, but no more than around € 3. Construction of the motorway began in 1986, and the continuation to Denizli and Burdur is being planned.
