The PSD Bank RheinNeckarSaar eG was created in 2002 through the merger of the two PSD banks Stuttgart-Freiburg and Saarbrücken. PSD Bank Stuttgart-Freiburg eG emerged in 2000 from the merger of PSD Bank Stuttgart eG and PSD Bank Freiburg eG.

The year 1872 is considered to be the birth of the 14 independent PSD banks nationwide , when the Imperial General Post Office suggested the establishment of savings and advance payment associations for post office officials. The savings and advance payment associations were renamed in 1903 as Post Savings and Loan Associations (PSpDV). In 1998 they opened up to all private customers and changed their legal form to registered cooperatives (eG).
