Motive: Temple of Heaven

The panda is an investment coin made of precious metal that has been issued by the People's Republic of China since 1982 . The fineness is, with few exceptions 999/1000, according to 99.9%.

The Temple of Heaven in Beijing is always shown on the front . Imprinted is 中华人民共和国 ( Pinyin : zhōng huá rén mín gòng he guó ; People's Republic of China). The year of issue is always on the bottom. The back shows portraits of pandas that are different every year, with the exception of 2001 and 2002, which have the same picture. Sometimes the backs are different depending on the size, or different from the glossy stamp version than the polished plate. The official Mint is the China Mint. The current, official issuing agency is the China Gold Coin Incorporation. The gold coin is available in Germany from banks and savings banks . However, the silver and platinum versions must be purchased through specialized coin and precious metal dealers. The 2015 vintage was coined due to the Measurement Law without any indication of weight . This law states that only the metric system may be used in the People's Republic of China . Since 2016, the China Panda has been issued in both silver and gold with weight information in grams . In silver, the denomination of 30 grams is given the face value of 10 yuan , in gold the denomination of 8 grams is given 100 yuan, 15 grams is 200 yuan and 30 grams is 500 yuan.

It was minted until 1988, then suspended, reissued in 1992, suspended 1995–2004, reissued in 2005. In 1997, 1999–2002 and 2005 the Goldpanda was minted in a 1 kg version (99.99%, polished plate version). Since 2006 the coin has been officially issued by the China Gold Coin Incorporation.

Silver panda

In 1983, the first 27 gram Panda- was silver issued coin, in the embodiment proof, but with the fineness 900/1000, corresponding to 90.0%. It was minted until 1985. As a replacement for the first panda silver coin, which was discontinued in 1985, silver pandas were minted in the denominations of 1 ounce and 5 ounces in 1987, but with a higher fineness of 99.9% and only in the polished plate version. In 1988 the 1 ounce silver panda was released. Instead, there was a 12-ounce version. The weight of the silver pandas now corresponded to the large gold pandas. The large silver versions were minted until 1997 (12 ounces) and 1996 (5 ounces). The 5-ounce version was available again in 2005. From 1989, the 1-ounce version of the silver pandas were minted again (but with different panda motifs), in addition to the previously exclusively issued version in proof (2000–2002 and 2005 exposed) now for the first time also in the brilliant brilliant finish . From 1993–1998 the panda in silver was also available for the first time in a shiny uncirculated version in 1/2 ounce. From 1997–1998 the 1/2 ounce silver panda was now also available in the polished plate version. 1998–2005 the silver panda was minted in a 1 kg version (99.9%, polished plate design). Since 2006 the coin has been officially issued by the China Gold Coin Incorporation. Since 2016, the coin has been weighted in grams instead of ounces.

The circulation of the silver pandas (1 ounce shiny uncirculated version) was increased significantly in 2010 for the first time in 7 years (from 600,000 to 1,500,000 pieces). By 2012 the circulation had increased tenfold to 8 million pieces. The vintages until shortly after the turn of the millennium had relatively small editions and are now traded at a significant surcharge compared to the pure material value, sometimes up to 200 euros per piece. This is why there are numerous counterfeits of these coins, some of them made of silver and some made of silver-plated copper or iron alloys.

Platinum panda

The first platinum panda coin was launched in 1987 (1 ounce, purity 99.95%, proof). In 1990, in addition to the 1-ounce platinum, smaller denominations were also minted, but only in the proof. No platinum pandas were minted from 1991–1992. From 1993–1997 the platinum panda was reissued, but now in the smaller denominations of 1/10 and 1/20 ounces (99.95%, polished plate design), in 1997 only in brilliant as-uncirculated. After a further break from minting, the platinum panda was again available from 2002 to 2005 as a proof.

Bi-metal panda

In 1992, the panda coin was also issued for the first time in a bi-metal version, in the composition 1/10 ounce gold + 1/28 ounce silver (99.9%, proof). In 1993 the bi-metal panda was now available in the composition 1/4 ounce gold + 1/8 ounce silver. 1994–1997 the bi-metal pandas of 1992 and 1993 were issued together (but probably with the new panda motif of 1994). From 1995–1997, two more bi-metal pandas were added (composition 5 ounces gold + 2 ounces silver and 1/2 ounce gold + 1/5 ounce silver).

Miscellaneous panda coins

From 1983–1984 a version in copper was minted (12.7 grams, face value 1 yuan, fineness 70.00%, proof). In addition, bi-metal embossing made of gold and silver was produced at times.

Panda coins without face value

Since 1983, in addition to the normal issue coins, a small edition of gold and silver coins without denomination has been minted. These do not make it into the official edition, but are given by the Chinese government as guest gifts or state gifts for important people from politics and business. In Europe and America, these coins appear very rarely on the open market. The rumor has also erroneously spread in many countries that these coins are plagiarism due to the missing denomination. In fact, the collector's value among connoisseurs is well above that of the issue coins.

Commemorative coins

Panda commemorative coins in gold, silver or brass are sometimes minted on special occasions. These, however, do not show the temple of heaven on the front, but the Chinese national coat of arms. These commemorative coins are therefore not part of the Panda investment coin type .

For the 25th anniversary of the panda coins, two commemorative coin sets were issued in 2007, a gold coin set and a silver coin set. The gold coin set contains 25 coins each 1 / 25oz Au.999 15 yuan, together exactly 1 ounce of gold. The silver coin set contains 25 coins of 1 / 4oz Ag.999 3 yuan each, totaling 6.25 ounces of silver.

Special features in 2008 for the Olympic Games

In 2008, on the occasion of the Olympic Games in China, in addition to the well-known panda coins, other gold and silver coins in the form of coins and bars with various motifs relating to the Olympic Games were issued. Many of the embossments feature images of the Olympic torch or the five different comic-style mascots . Most of the coins are so-called colored coins, i.e. colored coins and bars. Like the panda coins, the coins appear from the China Gold Coin Incorporation and can be purchased from various mint offices or directly from the Chinese Volksbank.
