history

The first settlements in the area were established by the Etruscans . The place was first documented on October 2, 1041 in a document from the Badia di Passignano Abbey (today it is in the municipality of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa ). The place was also mentioned on March 30, 1085 in a document by the Pievere di San Leolino a Flacciano and in 1103 by Pope Paschal II ( plebem Sancti Leolini sitam in Panzano cum curte ). The origin of the castle is unknown, it was probably created by the Guidi or by the Republic of Florence, who used the castle as an outpost to defend against attacks from Siena . After that, the Firidolfi family (later Firidolfi-Ricasoli) ruled the town. Panzano was destroyed because of its membership of the Guelfs after the battle of Montaperti in 1260. The Borgo adjacent to the castle was built as a marketplace in the 12th century. The lord of the castle Messer Luca di Totto da Panzano took part in the Ciompi uprising in Florence in 1378 and thereby lost his owners in Panzano. After the defeat of the Republic of Siena in the conflict with Florence in 1555, the place lost its status as a border castle on the border with Siena and thus its strategic position. At this time the row of houses was built below the Borgo, which today leads to Piazza Gastone Bucciarelli on the main street.

Attractions

The church of Santa Maria in the town center
  • Castello di Panzano , castle in the center of the village, which joined the Val di Greve in 1250. Was taken by Siena and Alberico da Barbiano in 1397 . After another attack from Siena, the damaged ring walls were bricked deeper in 1434. In 1478 the town was attacked again by Siena with its allies from Naples . Today the castle is privately owned, with the curtain walls, the main tower (mastio) and two smaller towers still in place. A third fortified tower now serves as a bell tower for the adjacent Santa Maria church. The only original castle gate still exists, the wall opening on the back was created later.
  • Chiesa di Santa Maria , church in the center that belongs to the diocese of Fiesole . Built at the end of the 19th century over a 13th century church. Contains the canvas painting Matrimonio mistico di Maria Maddalena de 'Pazzi (created around 1669) by Pier Dandini and the painting Annunciazione ascribed to Michele di Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio . This is surrounded by the Figure di Santi by Bernardo di Stefano Rosselli. The frescoes in the apse were designed by Alfredo Cifariello. The campanile was created from one of the earlier defense towers.
