Farmers, trade and citizens' party

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Farmers, Trade and Citizens' Party ( BGB ) was a political party founded on December 23, 1936 as a nationwide party and constituted on January 30, 1937 in Bern . It emerged from the amalgamation of various cantonal peasant parties, which were founded during the First World War ( Zurich 1917, Bern 1918) and the 1920s and often ran parallel to the emergence of vigilante groups . In addition to peasant politicians such as Rudolf Minger from Bern and Fritz Bopp from Zurich, the new peasant parties also included representatives from large-scale industry and finance such as Aargau's Heinrich Roman Abt and Johannes Meyer-Rusca from Zurich (admittedly closely associated with the peasantry), as well as right-wing foreign politicians such as the Aargau doctor and "Vigilante General" Eugen Bircher .

history

The Progressive Citizens' Party, founded in 1911 as a split from the FDP from the canton of Basel-Stadt , which in the 1930s politicized as the National People's Party on the far right, belonged to the BGB, but in 1957 it again joined the Liberal Democratic Party .

With Rudolf Minger, who initiated the establishment of the Bernese Farmers 'and Citizens' Party in the Bierhübeli in Bern at the end of November 1917 , the BGB was represented in the Federal Council for the first time from 1929 to 1940 . He was elected on December 12, 1929 and until his resignation in 1940 he headed the Federal Military Department (then EMD). All other BGB federal councilors, like Minger, came from the canton of Bern: Eduard von Steiger (1941–51), Markus Feldmann (1952–58), Friedrich Traugott Wahlen (1959–65) and Rudolf Gnägi (1966–79).

The BGB founded the Swiss People's Party in 1971 together with the democratic parties of the cantons of Glarus and Graubünden . At the time of this merger, there were sections in the cantons of Aargau , Baselland , Freiburg , Schaffhausen , Ticino , Thurgau , Vaud and Zurich, except in the canton of Bern .
