Patsy Kelly (born January 12, 1910 in Brooklyn , New York City , New York - † September 24, 1981 in Woodland Hills , Los Angeles , California ) was an American actress .

Life

Patsy Kelly was born Bridget Sarah Veronica Rose Kelly in Brooklyn , New York City in 1910 . After finishing school she became an actress and made her debut on New York's Broadway in 1928 . In 1930 and 1931 she appeared for the producer Earl Carroll in the then popular musicals Sketches and Vanities . She also starred on the side of the theater comedian Frank Fay . In the 1930s Kelly was seen in short television films by producer Hal Roach , where she appeared on this series alongside Thelma Todd . After Todd's death in 1935, she appeared in these series with Pert Kelton and later with Lyda Roberti .

In her private life, she openly confessed to her lesbian orientation and was therefore only able to get roles in the low-cost film production company Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC) in the 1940s , where she appeared in the films My Son, the Hero and Danger! Women at Work played along. At times she had a relationship with Tallulah Bankhead .

Kelly retired from the film business for some time in the 1950s and only appeared in television films again from the mid-1950s and in the decades that followed. She has appeared as a guest on various television shows, including solo for ONCEL , The Dick Van Dyke Show , The Wild Wild West and Alfred Hitchcock Presents . In 1968 Kelly had a notable role in the film Rosemary's Baby by Roman Polanski , in which she acted as neighbor Laura-Louise at the side of actors Sidney Blackmer , Ruth Gordon and Maurice Evans . In 1971 she returned to Broadway as an actress, where she got a role in the musical No, No, Nanette , in which Ruby Keeler and Helen Gallagher also starred. For her role there she received the Tony Award . She also played the following year in the musical Irene with Debbie Reynolds , which was honored with another Tony nomination. In 1976 Kelly played the housekeeper Mrs. Schmauss in the movie Crazy Friday , which also starred Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris . In 1979 Kelly starred in the Disney comedy The North Avenue Irregulars , in which Cloris Leachman , Edward Herrmann and Karen Valentine were part of the cast.

Patsy Kelly received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6669 Hollywood Boulevard . In 1981 Kelly died of cancer in Woodland Hills , California .
