Paul Schuster (born February 20, 1930 in Hermannstadt , Romania , † May 5, 2004 in Berlin ) was a German writer , translator and editor .

Life

Paul Schuster comes from the Romanian German minority of the Transylvanian Saxons . His father owned a delicatessen shop. After the Brukenthal-Gymnasium in Sibiu , the high school had taken, Schuster was in 1949 after Bucharest . There he worked as a young volunteer, later he worked as a permanent employee in the editorial offices of the daily newspaper " Neuer Weg " and the literary magazine " Neue Literatur ". In the 1950s, Schuster was married to the Romanian writer Ana Novac . Since the mid- 1950s he has published his own prose texts in German ; his best-known work is the two-volume novel Five Liter Zuika , which was designed as a panorama of the history of the Transylvanian Saxons and which remained unfinished in Romania. In 1968 the novel was presented as the first work by a German writer from Romania in the West at the Frankfurt Book Fair . Work on the third volume was only possible after moving to Berlin in 1972, but never finished.

On November 15, 1968, Schuster was elected as deputy chairman Eduard Eisenburger in the constituent meeting of the Council of Working People of German Nationality of the Socialist Republic of Romania . Anton Breitenhofer , Richard Winter and Peter Lamoth were elected as further deputies . During his time in Bucharest, Schuster came into close contact with the Romanian head of state Nicolae Ceaușescu . Later he made targeted attempts to promote the authors of the later action group Banat . As a result of Schuster's ambivalent attitude, there was a falling out with the young authors.

In 1971, Schuster accepted an invitation from the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, Erwin Wickert , and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts to Munich, and then did not return to Romania.

From 1972 Paul Schuster lived in the Federal Republic of Germany . After his partner Claire Foehn had separated from him, he led an eccentric existence at times. He was committed to the issues of the Roma and led various writing workshops in academies, adult education centers and prisons. A large number of texts were written in Germany, most of which have not yet been published. He also translated literary texts from Romanian into German , a. a. by Norman Manea.

Schuster was buried in the Stubenrauchstrasse municipal cemetery in Berlin-Friedenau .
