Paul von Krause (politician)
Paul Georg Christof Krause , from 1913 von Krause (born April 4, 1852 in Karbowo near Strasburg an der Drewenz , † December 17, 1923 in Berlin ) was a German lawyer and politician ( National Liberal Party ).
Life
He studied from 1870 to 1873 in Leipzig , Heidelberg and Berlin , the legal and social sciences and was four years later in Göttingen PhD. During his studies in 1870 he became a member of the Leipzig fraternity Germania . In 1878 he became an assessor and then a public prosecutor's representative in Insterburg and Königsberg. From 1880 Krause worked as a lawyer and from 1887 additionally as a notary in Königsberg . In 1890 he moved to Berlin . In 1888 he was elected for the first time for the National Liberal Party in the Prussian House of Representatives, to which he was a member - from 1896 as the second Vice President - until 1917.
Krause held numerous higher positions in the German judiciary, for example he was a board member of the German Lawyers' Association (1902–1909) and chairman of the Berlin Bar (1905–1917). He also chaired the Association for German Inland Shipping from 1904 to 1906. In 1906 he was appointed a Privy Councilor of Justice, raised to hereditary nobility on the occasion of the imperial jubilee in 1913, and finally appointed State Secretary in the Reich Justice Office in 1917 . He was the last in this position, because with the end of the German Empire and the establishment of the Reich Ministry of Justice , he resigned from this office on February 13, 1919. Out of his legal career, his contribution to the development of the general part of the BGB and the German tax reform stands out.
He continued his political activity in the Weimar Republic . Krause joined the successor party of the National Liberals, the German People's Party , and from 1919 sat in the Prussian state assembly and in the Prussian state parliament until his death .
From his marriage to Anna Burchard in 1880, he had four sons. The eldest, Paul (1882–1946), was later District Administrator in Querfurt and a member of the Provincial Parliament; the youngest, Helmuth (1893–1980), a doctor in Berlin and husband of the grotesque dancer Valeska Gert .
Paul von Krause died in Berlin in 1923 at the age of 71 and was buried in the Nikolassee Evangelical Cemetery. The grave has not been preserved.
Paul-Krause-Straße was named after him in the Berlin district of Zehlendorf .
