Ulrich was a daughter of the royal. prussia. Chamber musician Albert Ulrich at the Berlin Court Theater . She received her first musical lessons from her father, who recognized her acting talent at an early age. Through his mediation, she became a student of actress Auguste Crelinger and was able to make her debut at the Berlin amateur theaters "Konkordia" and "Urania" after a short time. There she met the general manager Botho von Hülsen and hired her in 1854 as a volunteer at the royal court stage.

In 1856 Ulrich moved to the city theater in Stettin and after only five months she went to the court theater in Hanover . There she was seen for the first time in a leading role; with overwhelming success, as over time she became a serious competitor of her colleague Marie Seebach . The actress Minona Frieb-Blumauer persuaded her to do a guest performance at the Dresden Court Theater in 1858/59 . There she was successful on May 20th as "Donna Diana". Ulrich worked with her colleague Bogumil Dawison right from the start , which delighted audiences and theater critics alike. Nevertheless, Ulrich still took private lessons with Franziska Sontag during this time . Her contract guaranteed her permanent employment at this theater for the rest of her life and in 1884 she was appointed court actress.

Her time in Dresden was only interrupted by a few guest tours to Munich , to which Ulrich had been invited by the artistic director Karl von Perfall . In addition to her public appearances at the National Theater in Munich , she performed several private performances for the Bavarian King Ludwig II. In 1884 she gave a longer guest appearance at the Berlin Court Theater, to which Theodor Fontane was enthusiastic:

Since I from the Ristori the " Queen Elizabeth " and Rossi " Louis XI. “I saw nothing in the field of tragedy and historical drama on our stage that came close to Fraulein Pauline Ulrich's “ Pompadour ”!
Here we had to live into a character, paying attention to all the smallest details - here everything was thought out and calculated and yet again became natural under the full measure of her own art; Control and reins at every moment and yet again every freedom that is the result of security. The pleasure of following such a game is extraordinary .

Court actress Pauline Ulrich died on May 25, 1916 in Dresden at the age of 81. Her grave is in the Alten Annenfriedhof in Dresden's Südvorstadt .
