Paul von Stolzmann
Paul Rienzi Eugene of pride man (* 18th August 1901 in Strasbourg ; † 27. August 1989 in Reinbek ) was a German diplomat in the era of National Socialism and in the Federal Republic as well as managing director of the Goethe Institute .

Paulus von Stolzmann was the son of the general of the same name, Paulus von Stolzmann and Mathilde Bühring. In 1937 he married Jutta von Hase, the daughter of the Colonel of the State Police and Lieutenant Colonels Günther von Hase and Ina Hicketier, who was also the sister of his close and long-time friend Karl-Günther von Hase . After a long stay in Bonn, the couple lived in a villa in Reinbek from 1970 to 1989 until Stolzmann's death . The marriage had four children. Paulus von Stolzmann was the grandfather of the film and theater actor Claudius von Stolzmann and the uncle of the director Peter Stein .
Life
After graduating from high school in 1916 at the age of 16, von Stolzmann began to study law at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen until 1919 . In 1920 he was reciprocated in the Corps Suevia Tübingen . After three years of study, he went to the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna and shortly afterwards joined the diplomatic service of the Foreign Office . His first posts as attaché took him to the German embassy in Istanbul , Kaunas , Belgrade and Riga . According to Braunbuch and his personal files in the Foreign Office, von Stolzmann joined the National Socialist German Workers' Party on November 1, 1933 . As counselor at the German Embassy in Washington, DC , he temporarily headed the Consulate General in Chicago in November 1938 . In 1940 he was involved in the resettlement of the Baltic Germans . In 1944 he was deployed in Berlin as Legation Councilor 1st class in the liaison office of the Commissioner for Information. There he worked as an employee of Horst Wagner and Karl Megerle in the "Anti-Jewish Action Point". On April 20, 1944, he was promoted to lecturing councilor and deployed to the General Staff of Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt in Paris . When this staff was withdrawn after the unconditional surrender of the Wehrmacht , von Stolzmann was interned in the United States from May 1945 to June 1946. In 1951 he returned to the Foreign Service. In the service of the Federal Republic, among other things, he was ambassador to Ethiopia , Uruguay , Bolivia and then until 1964 in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg . Paulus von Stolzmann retired in Italy in 1966 and was director of the Goethe Institute in Naples until 1971 . In 1970, Der Spiegel reported that Günter Grass did not read literature in his institute because, according to Stolzmann, such a thing was not literature.
