Pedraza is a mountain village in the province of Segovia in the autonomous community of Castile and Leon . The whole place has been recognized as a 'National Cultural Property' ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) in the Conjunto histórico-artístico category since 1951 .
location
Pedraza is at an altitude of about 1070 meters above sea level. d. M. in the northwestern foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama . The distance to Segovia is almost 40 kilometers in a south-westerly direction; to Madrid it is about 125 kilometers.

economy
Pedraza used to be the artisanal and mercantile center of a number of small hamlets and farmsteads. With the increasing mechanization of agriculture and the improvement of the infrastructure, especially the traffic routes, this function is no longer given. However, the place has become attractive for day and weekend tourism.
Attractions
- The Puerta de la Villa , the only access to the town center, originally dates from the Middle Ages; However, it was restored and redesigned in the 16th century by Íñigo Fernández de Velasco y Mendoza , the second Duke of Frías .
- The site's former prison ( cárcel ), with its two small wooden cells, in which up to 15 offenders could be housed, can be visited. It is regarded as an impressive testimony to a medieval or early modern small-town prison.
- The townscape with its street-side arcades or wooden studs, stone houses and alleys is the greatest attraction of Pedraza. Bullfights ( corridas ) also took place in the large main square, Plaza Mayor .
- The Church of San Juan was built in Romanesque style - the tower and apse still date from this period ; the interior was redesigned in the baroque period .
- The Castle Pedraza was one of the Velasco family and is located about 250 meters from the town center.
Festivals
The "Night of Candles" ( Noche de las Velas ) takes place on the 1st and 2nd Saturday in July, giving the place a peculiar atmosphere in the late evening and early hours of the night.
