Contemporary representation and description of Janko Peranski at a parade of Croatian horsemen in the life guard of the Saxon Elector in 1678: “17. Mr. Johann von Peraynsky, Obrist-Lieutenandt from the Leib-Guardie, Cammerherr and Ambts-Hauptmann zu Moritzburg, in a leopard skin . "

Janko Peranski ( Croatian Ivan Peranski ), completely Janko Šubić von Bribir Peranski (self-designation Janko Peranzky de Pernia ; contemporary Janco Perainsky or Germanized Johann (es) von Perainsky ; † 1689 in the Kingdom of Croatia ) was a Croatian count and Saxon lieutenant colonel , chamberlain and Governor of Moritzburg (Saxony) . From 1661 to 1680 he was in command of the Croatian body company on the horse of the Saxon Elector Johann Georg II. (1613–1680).

Life

Origin and service at the military border

Peranski came from the Croatian noble family of Count Peranski from the 14th century , a branch of the noble family of Šubić . The name of this branch of the Šubić family is derived from the Perna family estate near Karlovac , where the family owned small estates.

Peranski was the son of Gašpar Peranski and his wife Margarete, nee Janković. He performed his service for the Habsburg Monarchy as an officer on the Croatian military border in Karlovac . He was socially skilled and well-educated and spoke German, Croatian and Latin. It is likely that the Croatian ban and general Petar Zrinski recommended the Saxon Elector Johann Georg II. Peranski as captain of the guard. Both rulers were in correspondence and the Peranski family, like the Croatian Ban, came from the Šubić family.

At the Saxon court

An imperial decree issued by Leopold I in Pressburg on September 6, 1659 , allowed Peranski with 20 Croatian riders to travel freely and unhindered to Saxony in order to enter the Electoral Saxon service . In March 1660 the company of Croatian horsemen , initially 87 and later up to 150 men strong, was placed in the life guard of the Saxon Elector. Peranski became its commander ( Croatorum capitaneus ) on August 12, 1661 and remained so until it was dissolved in 1680.

The Saxon Elector was obviously very satisfied with Peranski's service, so that Peranski was promoted from Lieutenant of the Guard to Rittmeister with simultaneous appointment to Chamberlain as early as 1661 . Peranski's correspondence with the elector is documented from 1666. Over the years Peranski handed to the elector several gifts, among other things, so in 1662 the ornate Ottoman saddle pad and in 1667 a magnificently embroidered with gold and silver wire Ottoman canteen of leather. On February 3, 1669, he presented the elector as a gift from a folding rule, dividers, signs compass, knife and folding blades existing test kit from brass , presumably created around 1667 by a Croatian champion. The saddle pad was sold in 1798. The canteen and measuring utensils are in the armory (Dresden) , today part of the Dresden State Art Collections .

In 1675 Peranski was finally promoted from Rittmeister to Lieutenant Colonel by the Elector for his services . In addition Peranski received as Amtshauptmann a house with brewing and licensed premises and property in Eisenberg (Moritzburg) .

End of service and death

In 1679 Peranski bought the Brlog Castle in Croatia on a hill above the right southern bank of the Kupa west of Kamanje for 19,000 forints . The Croatian bodyguard was founded in 1680 by the subsequent Saxon Elector Johann Georg III. dissolved for cost reasons and released the riders to their home. After his service, Peranski returned to Croatia in 1681, but also came to Moritzburg several times afterwards to visit his possessions. Peranski died in Croatia in 1689 and was buried in the family crypt in the chapel of St. Anton in the Pauline monastery in Svetice near Ozalj .

family

From Peranski's marriage to the wealthy Jelena Bardarini von Kieselstein , the four children Mihajlo, Franjo, Jure († around 1692) and Barbara Sidonija (married Delišimunović; † March 27, 1713) emerged. With the death of Franjo's son, Janko Peranski's grandson, Gašpar Peranski (Caspar von Peranski) in 1740, the noble family of Count Peranski died out in the male line .
