In the CDU parliamentary group, Peter Krause u. a. Commissioner for the victims of the SED dictatorship.

In April 2008, Prime Minister Dieter Althaus appointed Krause to succeed Jens Goebel for the office of Thuringian Minister of Education . This decision met with criticism nationwide. State and federal representatives of the SPD, the Greens and the Left Party recalled Krause's past as an editor and employee of magazines "rechts von der Union", which had been ignored in his official biography, and concluded that he was unsuitable for his upcoming office. Their representatives as well as the conference of Thuringian student bodies and the Central Council of Jews called on Althaus to withdraw Krause's nomination. Althaus, the CDU parliamentary group and some national newspapers (Frankfurter Allgemeine, Neue Zürcher Zeitung) defended him as a "man in the middle".

In 2004, Krause claimed in a newspaper interview that he was not aware of Junge Freiheit as right-wing extremists. In 2008 he stated that his critics were not aware of the development of the paper; it has "become a recognized medium in the press landscape" and he is an emphatic advocate of press freedom . He called his work as editor of the paper “an episode that quickly came to an end.” After the fall of the Wall, he wanted to become a journalist and the paper was recommended to him. However, he had not been able to realize his ideas there, "to build a conservatively oriented and well-founded, but open, anti-ideological and really critical debate sheet beyond political camps". He later stated in a radio interview that the JF represented "a political line that I, as a CDU politician, do not share."

Furthermore Krause was the author of the New Right theory organ stage . In the context of the debate about Krause, it was recalled that in the 2001 stage the Latin version of the Horst Wessel song was printed under the heading Culturcuriosa, Part 1 .

As Thuringian minister of culture, Krause would have become chairman of the board of trustees of the Buchenwald and Dora-Mittelbau memorials . The director of the Buchenwald memorial, Volkhard Knigge , accused him of having “fogged up and thoroughly softened his contacts with the New Right ” and asked him “to consider what is best for the common good”.

For Henryk Goldberg from the newspaper Thüringer Allgemeine it was not “about the question of whether Peter Krause is a neo-Nazi, of course he is not.” However, he is “one of those who, willingly or not, are on a solid intellectual level ensure that this sediment is given a wide-ranging intellectual legitimation. "

On May 5, 2008, Krause declared that he was renouncing the office of Thuringian Minister of Culture. He sees "no possibility of being able to successfully exercise the sensitive office with appropriate objectivity". Instead, Bernward Müller became the new minister of education. In 2009, in his book Adapted World , Krause went into the circumstances of his withdrawal.

On February 27, 2009, Krause was elected chairman of the parliament's committee for science, art and media. In the state elections in Thuringia in 2009 he was defeated in his constituency with 7,715 votes to Falk Thomas Hartung ( Die Linke ) and thus left the Thuringian state parliament.
