Péter Cardinal Erdő [ ˈpeːtɛr ˈɛrdøː ] (born June 25, 1952 in Budapest , Hungary ) is Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest and Primate of Hungary.

His motto is: Initio non erat nisi gratia (German: In the beginning there was nothing, just grace).

Life

Péter Erdő studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Esztergom , Budapest and Rome and received his doctorate in theology and canon law . In 1975 he received the sacrament of ordination and then worked as a vicar in Dorog . After further studies in Rome from 1977 to 1980 he worked from 1980 to 1988 as a theology professor at the seminary in Esztergom and held visiting lectureships at several foreign universities. On September 5, 1994, Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Apostolic Protonotary . From 1988 onwards, Péter Erdő lectured as a professor at the Theological Faculty of the Péter Pázmány Catholic University in Budapest, where he was rector from 1998 to 2003.

Péter Erdő was appointed titular bishop of Puppi and auxiliary bishop in Székesfehérvár on November 5, 1999 by Pope John Paul II . The Pope himself donated his episcopal ordination on January 6, 2000, with Giovanni Battista Re and Marcello Zago , secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , being co-consecrators . On December 7, 2002 Erdő was appointed Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest. The inauguration (enthronement) took place on January 11 of the following year. Through his office as Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, he is also Primate of Hungary.

Pope John Paul II accepted Péter Erdő on October 21, 2003 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Balbina all'Aventino in the college of cardinals . He was the youngest participant in the 2005 conclave . In 2006 he was appointed President of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences , which he remained until 2016. Erdő was also chairman of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops' Conference from 2005 to 2015 .

Cardinal Erdő is a member of the International Award Committee of the Adalbert Foundation . Péter Erdő was on September 23, 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed member of the Second Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for Africa (October 4 to 25, 2009). After the resignation of Benedict XVI. Cardinal Erdő participated in the 2013 conclave . He was considered papabile .
