Peter Michel (born October 14, 1938 in Freyburg (Unstrut) ) is a German art historian , publicist and exhibition organizer.

Life

Peter Michel comes from a family of craftsmen . After attending the Kant high school in Berlin-Lichtenberg and graduating from high school , he studied German and art education at the Pedagogical Institute in Erfurt from 1956 to 1959 . From 1959 to 1964 he was a teacher at the Oberschule Neudorf in the Erzgebirge . He then worked in the Annaberg district management and in the Karl-Marx-Stadt district management of the Free German Youth (FDJ). From 1970 to 1974 he was an aspirant at the Institute for Social Sciences at the Central Committee of the SED ; there he did his doctorate on the subject of "Interrelationships between professional and non-professional art". In 1974 he became a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR (VBK) and a member of the central board of the VBK. From 1974 to 1987 he headed the magazine “ Bildende Kunst ” (organ of the central board of the VBK) published by Henschel Verlag .

Because of public criticism of the curriculum for the subject of art education , it was regulated in 1976 by the Ministry of Popular Education of the GDR . A year later, a controversy followed with Hans Koch about the timeliness of the term “ socialist realism ”.

From 1979 to 1991 he was a member of the Association Internationale des Critiques d'Art . From 1987 to 1989 he worked as secretary of the central board of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR (VBK). At the end of 1989 he resigned from the VBK and the Socialist Unity Party of Germany - Party of Democratic Socialism (SED / PDS). Until the publishing structure was dissolved, he was the artistic and technical director of the children's book publishing house in Berlin for a short time ; this was followed by unemployment. From 1991 until 2003 he worked as a freelancer for pb-Verlag Munich, exhibition maker and freelance journalist. Michel has worked in 19 European and non-European countries. Since 1990 his main focus has been on the respectful handling of art created in the German Democratic Republic . In 1995 he donated a collection of texts for archiving and research to the Art Research Center at the Getty Center . In 1991, Michel became a founding member of the Society for the Protection of Civil Rights and Human Dignity (GBM) and a member of the GBM's national board. He was the spokesman for the GBM's “Culture” working group and a founding member of the “Art from the GDR” group of friends. From 2004 to 2008 and in 2012 he was the editor-in-chief of the GBM's ICARUS magazine , which was discontinued that same year.

Peter Michel is married to Maria Michel, b. Weigel, and father of three children.
