Peter Rieger (born April 12, 1953 in Frankfurt am Main ; † January 29, 2017 ) was a German concert and tour organizer .

Career

Together with his then wife Jutta Schremmer-Rieger, Peter Rieger founded the Peter Rieger Concert Agency (PRK) in Cologne in 1983 . Since 1975 he has organized concert tours, initially with German artists, including BAP . Among other things, Rieger worked for the then largest event agency Lippmann & Rau . Later he also cooperated with the concert promoter Marcel Avram . His first major international artist was Peter Gabriel , for whom he toured in 1983. He organized concerts for artists including U2 , Pink , Taylor Swift , Genesis , Joe Cocker , Phil Collins , Paul McCartney , Tina Turner , Elton John , Rolling Stones , Lionel Richie , Janet Jackson , David Bowie , Cher , Lou Reed , Prince , Mariah Carey , Meat Loaf , Whitney Houston , A-ha and Andreas Bourani . On the initiative of Rieger, the American artist Barbra Streisand , who, as a Jew, had always refused to play in Germany, performed on the Berlin Waldbühne . At the invitation of Egon Krenz , a member of the SED Central Committee responsible for youth at the time and later chairman of the GDR State Council , he organized the “Concert for Peace” in East Berlin in 1988 with James Brown and Joe Cocker.

In 1987 Rieger started the Bizarre Festival together with Ernst-Ludwig Hartz in Berlin and on the Loreley (St. Goarshausen) , which over the years developed into a two-day event.

On July 21, 1990, Rieger's agency made possible the rock opera “ The Wall ” with Roger Waters on the grounds of today's Potsdamer Platz , at that time still no man's land, which was first searched for mines before the 170 meter wide stage was set up. The concert took place in the West Berlin as well as in the East Berlin sector. In April 1995 Peter Rieger brought the musical Tommy by The Who to Germany. In July 2000, Rieger, Marek Lieberberg Konzertagentur and others, entered into a strategic cooperation with CTS Eventim AG, which took over 70 percent of PRK.

Rieger organized open-air concerts for classical music with the three tenors . He had the opera star Luciano Pavarotti perform for the first time in front of around 21,000 spectators on the Berlin Waldbühne . Rieger organized Europe-wide tours for Pavarotti, including performances on Red Square in Moscow and in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris .

At the end of 2015, Rieger gave up his position as managing director of the Peter Rieger concert agency, but remained an advisory partner of the company.
