Peter S. Kalikow (born December 1, 1942 in Queens , New York City ) is an American entrepreneur and passionate automobile collector.

Life

Peter Kalikow is of Russian Jewish descent and, as President, heads the New York real estate company HJ Kalikow & Company, LLC, founded by his grandfather in 1927 .

He studied at Hofstra University and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1965 . Kalikow began his career as a realtor in 1967 and became President of HJ Kalikow & Co. in 1973. After the death of his father, Peter Kalikow took over responsibility for all Kalikow holdings in 1982.

In 1988 Kalikow acquired the New York tabloid New York Post from publisher Rupert Murdoch for $ 37.6 million, then the equivalent of DM 63 million. After acquiring a New York television station in 1986, Murdoch should have parted with the newspaper earlier because it was forbidden to publish a newspaper and operate a television station in the same market. However, the expiry of the exemption from the state authorities, which was limited to March 6, 1988, ultimately forced Murdoch to sell. When asked about his reasons for buying America's oldest newspaper, Kalikov replied, “I didn't want my tombstone to read: He built a lot of houses in Queens. I want more."

After the collapse of the real estate market, Kalikow had to file for personal bankruptcy in 1992. Steven Hoffenberg, a seedy financier, took over the "New York Post" and sold it to real estate agent Abraham Hirschfeld after barely two months, who in turn sold the paper to News Corp. in 1993 . Ltd. of the major Australian publisher Rupert Murdoch.

From 1994 to 1995, Peter Kalikow was a member of the board of the MTA ( Metropolitan Transportation Authority ), New York State's transportation company, which uses the New York City Subway, buses and trains to transport an average of 8 million people every weekday.

In 1995 Kalikow became a member of the "Board of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey " and moved to the MTA in 2001, where he remained chairman until May 2007. The New York Magazine headlined: The "Underground Man". Kalikow received no salary for his job as president of the MTA.

In May 2000, Kalikow became Chairman of the Board of Directors of Grand Central Partnership, a Business Improvement District (BID) in New York City. Kalikow is well known for this 70-block inner-city area as his company controls 10 buildings in the city and is headquartered at 101 Park Avenue.

In 2006 he donated the "Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency" to Hofstra University .

Peter Kalikow is married to Mary (née Mary Typaldos Jacobatos) and has two children with her, a son Nicholas Alexander and a daughter Kathryn Harold.

According to his own count, Peter Kalikow - in addition to various other vehicles - owns around 50 Ferraris . Other sources speak of more than 60 vehicles, including 25 Ferraris, which are stored and serviced in the underground car park of his New York office building at 101 Park Avenue . To compensate for the stress of the office, he occasionally drives down to the air-conditioned basement: “I just sit in a Ferrari cockpit or stroke the body. Then I'll be very calm, "a reporter quoted him as saying. His favorites include the models from the late 50s and early 60s. He regularly uses his Ferrari 250 GT Spyder California models of the first (unofficially GT Spyder California LWB = long wheelbase) and second series (unofficially GT Spyder California SWB = short wheelbase) and his Ferrari 400 Superamerica Aerodinamica . His collection includes a Ferrari 330 America ( FGN 5105), a Ferrari 400 Superamerica and a Ferrari 250 GTO replica, which is based on a Ferrari 330 GT 2 + 2 Series II (FGN 9325). He also owns a Ferrari 500 Superfast with covered headlights, a Ferrari 412 and modern models such as Ferrari F50 , Ferrari 360 Spider and Ferrari 456 GT , as well as several vehicles from Jaguar , Rolls-Royce , Aston Martin and Cadillac . Each of his cars has a "K" on the license plate.

Peter Kalikow regularly takes part in the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este . In 2005 he had a red Ferrari 250 GT California Spider flown in for this event. In 2006 the jury selected his Ferrari 410 Superamerica from 1959 , which is practically as good as new, with a Pininfarina body as the overall winner ("Best of Show"). Octane magazine reported extensively on this car, which was originally painted in white with blue stripes.

In 1967 Kalikow decided to realize his own automobile project: The Momo Mirage . However, the small series could not be produced economically as planned in the early 1970s and so there were only a few copies. Peter Kalikow presented a silver Momo Mirage at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2009.

In 2007 Pininfarina designed the Ferrari 612 K for Kalikow based on a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti . The K or Kappa stands for Kalikow. Kalikow's unique Ferrari 612 has the serial number 145746 and is painted in Pozzi Blue .

45 years after buying his first Ferrari, Kalikow had a one-off model with a retractable roof made based on a Ferrari 599 GTB , the Ferrari Superamerica 45.

Awards

In 1986 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Hofstra University . In 1988 Kalikow was named Alumnus of the Year.

2008 Peter Kalikow was for his outstanding service as a cultural ambassador and for its economic and philanthropic achievements of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana) as Commander awarded (Commendatore).
