history

The place was already settled at the time of the Etruscans and the Romans . The first documentary mention of Petroio is in 1175 as a fief of the Cacciaconti della Scialenga family, who ruled under the rule of Siena until 1266 and then handed over the rule to an administrator of the Republic of Siena. At the end of the 14th century the place was subordinate to the Salimbeni, a family of counts from Siena, and returned to the Republic of Siena after their quarrel with Siena. From 1500 the place was an independent comune and in 1777 became part of Trequanda.
