The parish church of Saint Rochus ( Romanian Biserica Parohială "Sfântul Rochus" ) is a Roman Catholic church on Strada Ion Slavici No. 54 in the VII. District Freidorf of the western Romanian city of Timișoara ( German  Timişoara ).

history

Around the beginning of the 18th century a wooden church consisting of one large room was built in Freidorf, the former location of which is today marked by a wooden cross. It was not until the second half of the eighteenth century that the congregation began building the current church. In addition to the church and the rectory, the parish also includes two hectares of farmland, as well as the and cemetery and a chapel. With donations from the faithful, a metal cross was erected opposite the church. The parish was founded in 1725 by the residents of the 60 houses in Freidorf at that time. The Brothers of Mercy , whose religious house was located in the building of today's eye clinic, took over the spiritual care until 1774. With the Jesuit father Joachim Hödl , Freidorf received its first pastor, who, however, followed his mission two years later.

A brick church was built between 1735 and 1936. The current church was completed between 1772 and 1777. The church was built in a simple baroque style and was initially equipped with an onion dome , which was given a baroque roof in 1879. In the church yard there is a large plane tree planted on the occasion of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 . In 2010 the number of believers in the parish was 300, including 200 Hungarians, 45 Germans, 40 Romanians, ten Bulgarians and five Croatians. The services are held daily in Romanian and on Saturdays in three languages (Romanian, Hungarian, German).

description

The baroque main altar was made in Vienna around the middle of the 19th century and consists of the altar table , the tabernacle , the altarpiece by Christian Guntsch , which depicts the patron saint of the church, Saint Roch , and decorative side elements. The two side altars of the church as well as the 14 stations of the cross on wood painted in relief technique come from Val Gardena in South Tyrol .

In the rear part of the church there are also a total of seven statues, five of which represent St. Nepomuk, St. Theresa , St. Anthony , St. Joseph , St. Jude Thaddäus , as well as two statues of Mary, one statue of St. Mary of Lourdes and the statue the Queen of Mary , all of which are the works of unknown local masters. Next to the high altar is the gold-decorated bishop's chair, which was created around the turn of the century, also the work of a local master.

The church has six windows made of clear and yellow glass, imitating the Baroque style. The yellow parts of the windows form a cross shape. The stand for the Easter candle is carved from wood and carries the symbols of the four evangelists . The baptismal cabinet, made of veneered wood, is richly decorated with inlays of liturgical motifs and is located on the right side of the church, where it is embedded in the masonry. The two rows, each with 10 wooden benches, were also made by a local master and offer 150 seats.

Three chandeliers illuminate the interior of the church, one of which is in a baroque style and two are locally produced. The confessional in the neo-classical style is located in the rear part of the church. The floor in front of the altar as well as the sacrificial altar itself are covered with white marble tiles and are a gift from the Freidorf family Matthias and Katharina Müller in memory of their three deceased children.

During the last renovation, the entire floor was replaced, on which marble and mosaic now alternate. At the same time, the church was provided with central heating, and the picture frames and the decorative elements of the altars were restored by Josef Tasi and provided with fresh gold leaf . He also made eight stylized pictures exhibited all around the church, seven of which depict the sacraments and one the Musica Sacra . The painting of the church walls is kept simple, and only two colors dominate the ceiling of the church.

organ

The church is equipped with a relatively small pneumatic organ with 5 registers from the workshop of the organ builder Carl Leopold Wegenstein , which he made before the First World War . According to the visitation files of the Csanád bishop Josef Lonovics of Krivina , there was an organ with 8 registers in the church from 1835 to 1838.
