Philipp Johann Tabbert , from 1707 von Strahlberg (baptized * October 6, 1677 in Stralsund , † September 2, 1747 in Halmstad ) was a Swedish officer , cartographer , geographer and linguist of German origin.

Life

Philipp Johann Tabbert joined the Swedish army in 1694 , where he was quickly promoted. In 1707 Tabbert was ennobled and took the name of Strahlberg . In the Great Northern War , during the Battle of Poltava in 1709, he was taken prisoner by the Russians and exiled to Tobolsk , where he carried out geographic and anthropological research on Siberia from 1711 to 1721 . After the Peace of Nystad , he returned to Stockholm in 1722 and published his studies in a book in 1730. The publication met with great interest and was translated into English , French and Spanish .

This book included new maps of all of Russia . He also redefined the border between Europe and Asia . It was supposed to run along the Ural Mountains and its tributary Obschtschi Syrt , then along the Volga and finally the lower Don , the latter serving as a border river since ancient times.

Strahlberg's work also deals extensively with the language and writing of the Tatars , Yakuts , Chuvashes , Crimean Tatars , Uzbeks , Bashkurts , Kyrgyz , Turkmentatars and Mongols . He precisely recorded Turkic inscriptions on tombstones on the banks of the Yenisei .

Von Strahlberg was soon forgotten until the playwright August Strindberg became interested in him.
