Philipp Brucker (born September 2, 1924 in Lahr / Black Forest ; † July 23, 2013 ibid) was a German journalist , Alemannic dialect poet and author . He was also Lord Mayor of Lahr from 1961 to 1981 .

Life

Childhood, war and studies

Philipp Brucker's father was the Lahr city architect Otto Heinrich Brucker, his mother Regina Brucker geb. Wahl, a deeply religious Protestant . Philipp grew up with his parents on Lahrer Schlossplatz together with five younger siblings. In 1931 he started primary school, from the sixth grade on in the fourth, the 3rd grade of the grammar school.

Since his father - originally a Social Democrat - had joined the NSDAP , Philipp Brucker belonged to the National Socialist Young People and joined the Hitler Youth in 1938 . He was also enthusiastic about Hitler after he happened upon his convoy on a bike tour.
In June 1942 Philipp Brucker was drafted into the Reich Labor Service ; this was associated with the award of “Reife” - the war high school diploma without an examination. He was used to work in Neckargerach . There was massive publicity for voluntary entry into the Waffen SS , whereupon Philipp also reported. From February 1943, the 18-year-old was deployed on the Eastern Front, among other things.

Shortly before the end of the war he withdrew, faced the French in Lahr and was interned until August 1948.

From 1949 to 1954, Philipp Brucker studied German and history as well as art history as a minor in Freiburg im Breisgau . The professors he heard from include the historian Gerhard Ritter , the philosopher Max Müller , the linguist Friedrich Maurer and his later doctoral supervisor Walter Rehm. In 1954 he graduated with a doctorate in philosophy; the dissertation has the title: "The historical element in the poetic work of Ina Seidel ."

The encounter with Friedrich Maurer gave Brucker the courage to acknowledge his Alemannic dialect and emerge as a dialect poet.

Working life

Philipp Brucker already worked for the Lahrer Zeitung and the Badische Zeitung during his studies . For seven years, from 1954 to 1961, he worked in the editorial department of the Lahrer Zeitung. During the disputes over rearmament in the Federal Republic of Germany , the Lahrer Zeitung had also argued for rearmament with nuclear weapons in an editorial in the cover section. Philipp Brucker threatened to leave the editorial office and was able to obtain assurance that counter-opinions would occasionally also be brought.

Philipp Brucker married Annelis Maihofer from Staufen in September 1952 ; The marriage resulted in two daughters (* 1953) and (* 1963), as well as a son (* 1958). His wife became seriously ill in 1972 and was in need of care for nineteen years until her death. In looking after the patient, Philipp Brucker and his children made great sacrifices.

In 1961, Brucker applied as a non-party candidate for the election of the Lord Mayor of Lahr and in October achieved an absolute majority in the second ballot.

Under Philipp Brucker as Lord Mayor, the city of Lahr handled numerous tasks, such as the construction of the sewage treatment plant, “Road construction with development of building areas; New schools; Sports facilities; Cemetery expansion; Kindergarten grants; Renovation and conversion of the slaughterhouse and town hall; Fire station and town hall extension; Construction work in the plow building for the music school and city library; Old town renovation; New hospital building; Retirement home construction grants; Renovation of public utilities; Housing; Construction of the indoor swimming pool; Elimination of the commercial channel. "

Due to the municipal reform in 1971/72, in which seven municipalities were added to Lahr, the mayor's area of responsibility was expanded again.

In 1973 Philipp Brucker was elected to the district assembly of the Ortenau district.

Philipp Brucker initiated the reconciliation of the inventor of the rotary piston engine, Felix Wankel , with his hometown Lahr. Wankel had fallen out of favor in Lahr in the Third Reich and was temporarily imprisoned. In 1981 Wankel accepted Lahr's honorary citizenship.

Brucker personally tried to get the town twinning with the French town of Dole , which was closed in 1962 and was viewed by both sides as a work of reconciliation.

In 1967 the almost 15,000-strong French garrison withdrew from Lahr and was replaced by an equal number of Canadian soldiers. This created significant problems that the mayor and the city administration had to solve. The Canadian soldiers were mostly professional soldiers, some with families, and needed more housing and infrastructure than the French, who were mostly conscripts. Lahr became the location of the Canadian headquarters in Europe.

With funding from Lord Mayor Brucker, a town partnership was established between Lahr and the Canadian city of Belleville in 1972 , which was followed by student exchanges and private friendship visits.

In 1981, after 20 years of service, Brucker did not stand for re-election as mayor and went into retirement.

Philipp Brucker as an Alemannic writer

Philipp Brucker began to publish small texts in Alemannic dialect for the Lahrer Zeitung as a student. As editor of the Lahrer Zeitung, Brucker wrote a weekly glossary in dialect; many of them appeared in 1965 in the book "'s Wundergigili". In these glosses the "Butzfrau Ida" plays the role of a critic from the people. In the book "Jo, Pfiffedeckel" a mayor named "Pfiffedeckel" tells stories that are taken from life. They were first broadcast on Südwestfunk . Numerous other publications in dialect, including poetry , followed, some also in standard German. Brucker held numerous dialect readings during his active time and in his retirement and became known far beyond Lahr as an Alemannic dialect poet.
