history

The town of Phippsburg was organized on January 26, 1814 and named after the Governor William Phips of Massachusetts , who was born in neighboring Woolwich. Previously, the area belonged to Georgetown. A first English settlement was built in 1607, but the Popham Colony was dissolved again in 1608. The area was repopulated in 1659 by John Parker II, who acquired the land from the Indians.

During the King Philip's War , the settlements in the Kennebec River Valley were attacked by Indians and burned to the ground. This happened again in 1689 in King William's War and only after the Peace of Utrecht did European settlers settle again.

Ragged Island was given to Harpswell in 1891. Some islands in Casco Bay were added in 1903, but given back in 1905. Bushy, Hen, Bear, Malaga, Burnt Coat, Black Snake, Wood, Little Wood and Gooseberry Islands were added in 1917.

Parks

The Popham Beach State Park is a 214 hectare State Park in Phippsburg. English colonists from the Plymouth Company settled in the area for a short time in 1607. A fortified settlement, Fort George, was built by George Popham. After the death of George Popham, the surviving colonists built the Virginia of Sagadahoc and sailed back to England in 1608.
