The Pioneer Brigade 30 "Rhein-Weser" was a large unit of the army of the Bundeswehr . The headquarters were in Hilden . The engineer brigade was subordinate to the Military District Command III / 7th Panzer Division . The nickname " Rhine - Weser " reflects the area where the brigade is stationed in northern West Germany.

In addition to almost the entire range of skills of the pioneer troops , NBC defense was also part of their tasks.

assignment

The Pioneer Brigade 30 "Rhein-Weser" combined the range of tasks of the pioneer and the NBC defense force . In peacetime operations and operations, this included the construction and operation of field camps in the operational areas, as well as water treatment for the German soldiers deployed abroad. Furthermore, tasks from the area of civil-military cooperation were added.

In the event of a defense , in addition to promoting the movement of one's own and inhibiting or paralyzing the movement of opposing troops, the construction of traffic routes, their repair, blocking and blasting as well as the construction of field fortifications fall within the scope of the pioneers. The NBC defense units added the NBC detection and warning service, as well as decontamination and water treatment to the range of orders.

Lineup

After the end of the East-West conflict , the structure of the pioneer troops was changed to take up Army Structure V and V (N). A large part of the pioneer troops of the field and territorial army was previously divided into pioneer commands. The German Corps led a corps troops ever a pioneer squad. Similarly, the territorial commands either led a pioneer command directly subordinate to it or, in the case of the Schleswig-Holstein territorial command, a pioneer regiment of comparable size. At the level of most of the divisions, engineer battalions were planned as part of the division forces; in the territorial army, each military area command led a pioneer regiment.

In the new structure, the bulk of the above-listed units of the pioneers of the field and territorial army - insofar as these were not decommissioned - were combined in newly established pioneer brigades . The pioneer brigades were each subordinate to a staff of a military area command / division . These merged large formations of a new type combined units and tasks of the previous field and territorial army. Only in the event of a defense would the associations probably have been separated again. The same applied to the engineer brigades.

The Pioneer Brigade 30 was set up on October 1, 1993 in the Hilden forest barracks and was subordinated to the Defense Area Command III / 7th Panzer Division , which was merged around the same time . Parts of the Pioneer Command 800 with staff in Hilden were used for the establishment.

period of service

The brigade's ten-year service was characterized by a further restructuring in 1997 and the deployment in the extended range of tasks of the Bundeswehr. The association's two core battalions, Pioneer Battalion 1 and NBC Defense Battalion 7 , were assigned to the Crisis Response Forces (KRK) and were accordingly often deployed abroad .

resolution

At about the same time as the defusion of Defense Area Command III and the 7th Panzer Division , Pioneer Brigade 30 was decommissioned on September 30, 2002.

Association badge

Unlike most other brigades in the army, the engineer brigade did not have its own badge . The soldiers therefore wore the association badge of the superior military area command or the superior division .

As a "badge", the internal association badge of the staff and the staff company " pars pro toto " was sometimes used imprecisely for the entire pioneer brigade. It showed the Bergisch lion as well as the Westphalian horse and the stylized Rhine on a red-green shield (representing the Rhineland and Westphalia ) similar to the coat of arms of North Rhine-Westphalia . The stylized bridge in the black weapon color of the pioneer troop is shown in a similar way in the beret badge of the pioneer troop. The bridge appears similarly in the other internal badges of the staffs and the staff companies of the other pioneer brigades. Overall, the design was reminiscent of the internal association badge of the Pioneer Command 800 with staff, also in Hilden.
