Poggio (also Poggio San Terenzo , or Terentio (Podium Sancti Terentii)) is a fraction of the municipality of Camporgiano in the province of Lucca , Tuscany region in Italy .

geography

The place is about 2 km southeast of the main town Camporgiano, about 35 km north of the provincial capital Lucca and about 80 km northwest of the regional capital Florence in the upper Serchio valley in the Garfagnana countryside . The place is 451 m and in 2001 had about 320 inhabitants. Today there are around 290. The place is located on a southern branch of Monte Capriola (537 m) and is surrounded by the Edron to the northwest , which flows into the Serchio about 1 km north of Poggio.

history

Archaeological finds bear witness to the Ligurian settlements that lived here in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. . AD until their defeat by the Romans lived. The place was mentioned several times in the 10th century as Pieve di San Terentio di Rogiana, the place and the two churches were first documented in 1168 in a document from Pope Alexander III. to the priest of Pieve Fosciana . The lords of Careggine and Bacciano ruled here from the 11th century (today a ruined castle near Villetta , San Romano in Garfagnana ). After the expansion of Lucca , the place came to the Vicaria di Camporgiano with the Statuto Lucchese in 1308 . After the death of Castruccio Castracani († 1328), the place came under the rule of Malaspina , who gave the feudal rights of the place to Florence from 1341 to 1343. The Malaspina era ended after local uprisings in 1348 and Poggio (Podii Sancti Terenzii) came under the rule of Pisa. By Charles IV. The place in 1369 came to Lucca, where the location to 1430 and the fall of the Signoria of Paolo Guinigi remained. After several years of territorial disputes between Florence, Lucca and Pisa, the residents asked for help from Leonello d'Este (1407–1450), who then ruled from 1446. The d'Este were then the masters of the place (Vicaria estense di Camporgiano), with the exception of the Napoleonic occupation, until the unification of Italy.

The Church of San Biagio in the Località La Villa (Rogiana)
  • Torre Campanaria , bell tower of the old church ( Santa Maria Assunta , also Santa Maria in Rogiana ) in the town center. The church was built in the 16th century as the oratory of the Church of Rogiana (now San Biagio) and was destroyed during World War II.
  • Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta , church on the edge of the historic center of Poggio. The new church was built after World War II in the 1950s and was consecrated by Paolo Bertoli .
  • Chiesa di San Biagio , church in Località La Villa (approx. 1 km south-east of Poggio), was built in the 12th century as Santa Maria di Rogiana and has been called San Biagio since 1684.
  • Rocca della Capriola , castle ruins from the 11th / 12th centuries Century above the place on Monte Capriola (Podium Sancti Terentii), which was built by the lords of Bacciano and Careggine. It lost its importance in the 14th century, the demolition began in the 19th century when stones from the castle were used for houses.
