Polaris is a metalcore band from Sydney , Australia, founded in 2012 .
history
Polaris was founded in 2012 in the Australian metropolis of Sydney and consists of singer Jamie Hails, the two guitarists Rick Schneider and Ryan Siew, bassist Jake Steinhauser, who also acts as a background singer , and drummer Daniel Furnari. Former musician is keyboardist James West. At the end of November 2013, an EP with six tracks was released with Dichotomy , which was produced by Will Putney and released in self-distribution. In the first three years the group completed two concert tours through Australia and played as the opening act at the Free Your Mind Festival organized by the Djent band Northlane .
At the end of January 2016 the release of their second EP The Guilt and the Grief followed , which also has six tracks and in which Marcus Bridge from Northlane has a guest vocal part. The self-published EP made it to the Australian album charts , where it entered the week of February 14, 2016 at number 34 and lasted for a week. This was followed by two further national concert tours in the opening act for Parkway Drive and in November with Northlane. The latter was completely sold out.
After the band was signed by Resist Records and their EP The Guilt and the Grief reissued on vinyl, they signed with SharpTone Records for the international market in mid-2017 . On November 3, 2017, the debut album The Mortal Coil , produced by Carson Wentz and Grant McFarland , was released worldwide.
In February 2017, the group toured Australia with Periphery before completing another concert tour on a national level between October 20 and 28, 2017, which included five concerts. A week later the band started as part of Never Say Die! Toured her first tour of Europe accompanied by Emmure , Deez Nuts , Chelsea Grin , Sworn In , Kublai Khan and Lorna Shore . The tour ended on November 28, 2017 with a concert at the LKA Longhorn in Stuttgart .
In 2018 the band received a Best Hard Rock / Heavy Metal Album nomination for The Mortal Coil at the ARIA Awards .
music
The music is described as a melodic variant of Metalcore , which also shows influences from the Djent movement. The band is compared with Architects and Northlane , and with their occasionally poppy vibe even with groups like Erra and The Word Alive . The singing of Jamie Hails is ascribed a great emotionality, as brought out by Kyle Pavone from We Came as Romans , which also appeals to fans of post-hardcore . The music was also compared with The Amity Affliction - especially through the change between clear vocals and screaming - and with Fallujah . As with most of the representatives of this genre, the singing alternates between screaming and melodic clear singing . However, the singers now and then forego the common principle of “screamed stanzas, sung refrain”, but turn this principle around; so in the piece Dusk to Day . In In Somnus Veritas , the musicians forego clearly sung passages and musical structure.
In their music, the musicians use elements known for the genre such as breakdowns , captivating clear vocals and ambient passages, which allows a similarity to many representatives of metalcore. However, the group stands out from other metalcore bands because of their mixture of metalcore, post-hardcore and progressive elements. Furthermore, the music is described as a "symbiosis of catchiness and high technical level of play".
